Eczema questions

So, DS1 had eczema and pedi took us both off dairy at 6m, and it cleared up. We re-intro'd dairy at a year, and the eczema is only minor on upper arms.

DS2 got an eczema dx this week. Different pedi recommended Aveeno and hydrocortisone. He had a reaction, so we've been using Benedryl to help with the itching until we find a cream that works.

We ordered some Mustela stelatopia to see if that works.

How is everyone else treating the eczema? Did any other pedis recommend dropping dairy?

Re: Eczema questions

  • Could you define eczema for me? I don't know is DS2 has it or not. DS2 has dry skin, but it seems to get better with coconut oil and then it is gone. Does eczema hang around? His back is the driest...not sure if this is eczema or not.

@utpony‌ - I haven't tried coconut oil - I imagine that would be good for his extra sensitive skin. Where do they sell it?

@nebraska84‌ - eczema is just an itchy, red rash that comes and goes. DS2's rash looked like heat rash at first, but it didn't go away, and he started scratching it like crazy.

  • I use the mustela stelatopia lipid replenishing balm. Works much better than just the mustela stelatopia lotion. I also bathe once a week. Even just a bath without washing makes her skin super dry for several days.

No personal advice, but a family friend's daughter had eczema, and it turned out that she was having a reaction to their cat.  They re-homed the cat and now she doesn't have any skin issues.

  • Working in an allergy office as an RN I can say for sure that a very common cause for eczema is an allergy, be it from foods or the environment. The patches tend to occur more in the skin folds, ie: elbows, behind knees etc. It might be worth making an appointment with an allergist if the eczema gets worse or continues much longer.

My LO has what I think is eczema, I'm planning to ask about it at his upcoming pedi appointment. I only bathe him once a week since I noticed it is worse after baths, and I've been using the Aveeno eczema lotion which seems to help. We're already off dairy for other reasons but now I'm wondering if it is allergy related ...

We have coconut oil for cooking- now I might give that a try!
