Has anyone done Babywise?

I know some people are big fans and some aren't.  I'm talking mostly about the schedule of eat, wake sleep and trying to go 2 1/2-3 hrs between feedings.  Obviously if they're truly hungry I'm going to feed them, but I feel like they are snacking ALL THE TIME.  I feed one twin, then the other, then they both want to eat again.  Just wondering what your thoughts on it were if you've done it.   Thanks :)

No. No. No. No. Do not do this. It has been linked to failure to thrive. Feeding two is hard, but this method is dangerous.

  • I read the book with my singleton (my first) and did the basic concept of eat, wake, sleep with him. I, naturally, fell into this with my DD, as well. Both my kids were FF so they also naturally fell into an every 2-3 hour between feedings anyway. I like the idea of eat, wake, sleep and I'm big on routine so it worked for me. There's a lot of other "noise" in the book but the basic concept I liked. I will say I have NO idea what it's going to be like with twins so I'm completely keeping an open mind.
  • I have never heard of the book. However my girls are almost 7 weeks and since they have come from the nicu at 2 weeks they eat, are occasionally awake, then sleep. They eat every 3-4 hours, occasionally 5. I don't follow any plan or track anything. But this schedule works great for us right now.

  • Our pedi brought it up (I didn't ask), and told us not to do it with preemie twins because of issues with failure to thrive. She wanted them to get as many calories as they could. I've found they've naturally developed patterns though.

  • To add - they naturally do a wake, eat, play, sleep schedule now that they are older, but I've not forced that or tried to make them wait longer if they are hungry. Lots of "snacking" is a good way to signal your body to increase milk production, if you are breast feeding.

I did it. Not strictly but I followed the basic concepts. When my kids were little it was pretty popular on this board. Most of the MoMs I had newborns with don't seem to post here anymore so you might get a lot of anti-baby wise comments, but a bunch of us had success with it a few years ago. It worked great for me. I think the best points were the eat-play-sleep cycle and trying your best to get each baby to take a full feeding at each feeding. Neither of those concepts are unique to baby wise. Don't expect preemies to be able to do it because they sleep too much. Once they can stay awake after the feed though it gets much easier. Other good advice was to have a bedtime routine you follow daily and (eventually) start your day around the same time daily so that your kids get used to your routine and their feeds/naps become predictable. It makes leaving the house much easier.
  • My girls are 6 weeks.  I think I'll just follow it loosely and see how it goes.  I'm never not going to feed my baby if they're hungry, but I'm definitely trying to get them to take full feedings instead of just snacking every hour.  I get the cluster feeding thing, my son did that most evenings too but they're starting to do it during the day too.
  • I did Babywise with my daughter who is now almost 2 and loved it. She is a great eater and sleeper and I attribute that to Babywise. My twins haven't been born yet, so I can't speak to your specific situation, but I would say just stick with it. They are too little at this point to really stay on the 2-3 hour schedule for an extended period of time because they are growing so much right now! I remember thinking when my daughter was a few weeks old that I was failing at Babywise because sometimes it felt like I was feeding her every hour. Just stick with it and it will all come together, I promise. The most important thing to take away from Babywise is eat, awake, sleep. Just follow that routine. Have you read the Baby Whisperer? I found that her books really helped me when I had more specific questions I needed answered, and her method is basically the same as Babywise. I've written some blog posts on Babywise and why I am a believer and you can check them out here: https://idontsharepopcorn.blogspot.com/search/label/Babywise

I also follow this blog. She has a ton of great tips and resources about applying Babywise. https://www.babywisemom.com/
