Preemies

More weight gain discussion

I was at my pediatrician yesterday and after looking at some other stuff he is thinking that there may be an underlying condition other then prematurity that is causing my son to have very slow weight and height gain.

He is gaining proportionately but just very slow. Like 2oz a week. He is only 1 month adjusted and just under 3rd percentile for weight (adjusted) at 6lbs 2oz. I am glad that other then 1 bottle a day he has decided that we don't need to be overly agressive in adding more formula as he is getting enough breastmilk, etc.

We have played with adding omeprazole for his reflux, etc. Our next step is going to a genetic specialist. Has anyone else had this? From what i was reading in another post a lot of other preemies have been slow gainers too and their pedis never suggested an underlying condition?

Re: More weight gain discussion

  • When my youngest came home from the hospital our Neo first thought their may be an underlying issue to his slow growth and failure to thrive. They investigated 2 different scenarios.

First, they thought that his body was burning to many calories. He was having very rapid heart rates and some other issues. So the recalibrate his apnea monitor to be extra sensitive to high heart rates. After a month or so they ruled that out.

Their second thought was maybe a digestive issue. They looked into Hershprung Disease (he had a few red flags while in the NICU) and stomach motility issues.

Now we are just playing the wait and see game.

  • Hi!
He is actually thinking of stopping the reflux meds since they have not seemed to make any difference in him. He says if we go off and things get worse we will go back on but he doesn't see the point in medicating if its not helping.

As for the geneticist I told him to go ahead and put in the referral because I too would like to know. I think he is doing the process of elimination thing. He's a very good doctor, I quite like him!
