First Doc Appt...

So, I have to switch OB/GYN's because I'm moving at the end of June.  Being that I'd like to have a doc near by my new home, I set up my annual at a new office.  June 10th was supposed to be my annual.  Well, I just called and spoke with the woman I spoke with a couple weeks ago.  She remembers me and was super excited for me.  Now, I have my 'confirmation' appointment on June 10th...then 2 weeks after that, I have to go to an "Education" appointment which is an hour and change long.  I do NOT remember going through 2 appointments in one month when I was pregnant with DS.  Granted, that was 13 years ago..but oh my.

How many of you had your first appointment already? Did you have 2 or just 1?  Did your DH/SO go with you?

I'm sorry - I'm new to pregnancy with a partner as when I was pregnant with DS his father up and left...(nice right?).

Re: First Doc Appt...

  • I had my first appt on Monday and DH went with me. We also have a "pregnancy orientation" next Friday but they said it's like 2-3 hours :/ so not looking forward to being there that long.

Hey! My first appt is June 5th and it will be 3 appt all in one. I have one for a sono, one to meet with the dr, and one to meet with the lady that handles all the paper. My H will come to the sono (which is first in the am) and then he will head out to work while I do the rest.
Wow. That's crazy. I got all excited when I was told that they do a dating ultrasound - I asked if I can get a picture and she said that they don't do that...but when I go come back a month later for another appt they do one.  This is all new to me.  It's crazy.  Things have changed in the 13 years I've been a mom.  Geeze.

I was told an hour and a half or so.  Seriously? All for history and such.  If I'm gonna be there that long they better give me food. lol

  • I think every OB does it differently.  My OB does the first appointment as confirmation and education and all of that at once - at around 8 weeks.  Then 10 weeks he does fetal heartbeat. U/S he doesn't do until around 12 weeks.

  • @peggels24 - Yea, I'm starting to gather that assumption that each office is different.

Its just all overwhelming and exciting. :)

Yes, yes it is :)  I'm not going to lie - I got a little sad when I realized that I have another 7-8 weeks before u/s :(  BOO!

I've never heard of a separate "education" appointment, but that's the way your doctor does things.

  • Holy Wow!

Ours is June 3. With DD it's one apt. We were in there maybe 30 minutes for Family history, a Pap and the quick dos and don'ts. Before that appointment I hadn't had an annual in 6 years, so they had my file in storage and needed to start my folder from scratch.. and with having to do that, it still wasn't all that long.
  • What "education" are they giving you, exactly?

That sounds crazy to me, too! When I had my son it had been almost 8 years since I had my daughter and so many things were different. I'm more prepared for this one. I have a dating u/s tomorrow, then I won't see the OB until the end of next month.

Yea, I know. I said the same thing. I don't think I ever had 2 separate appointments with my DS.  But things have changed I suppose.

I was told it's to go over health history, prior pregnancy history, go over do's and don'ts, answer any questions, pap, and physical check up. It's completely different then what I would have thought. I mean, with DS, I went in - pissed in a cup, went over history, had an US, was given an Rx for prenatal vitamins, EDD, and set up my next appt only to be sent on my way.

Each OB is different I guess.  I'm going to go and pick up a "what to expect" book and see what that tells me.  Figures that I have wait until June 10th for my first appt.  I was told "If I have any questions to contact them. Especially if I have any bleeding, etc." Wow.

  • Thats crazy! I want to say my first appointment was an hour, had a sono, went over some paperwork, asked questions. I am imagining this one being even shorters since I don't really have any questions!
  • I made my first appointment, but she warned me it's going to be long. They take me for ultrasound first to do the viability scan and measurements, etc. Then we go to the insurance department and we discuss how we're going to be paying for all this, lol. Then we finally see the doctor.

I assume they're just splitting yours up into two different appointments.
