Party worries!!!

I just confirmed my pregnancy this morning. Baby #3. This weekend we have a big party at our house which we have been planning for months to celebrate my husband's 40th and my completion of my doctoral degree. I'm not ready to tell people that we are expecting, but it will be obvious to everyone when I am not drinking. Any advice on playing this one off? I'd like to wait a couple weeks, at least, to share the news.

Re: Party worries!!!

  • Pretend to drink. That should do the trick!

  • I was thinking about buying some fruit juice or something to make it convincing!
  • I'm having a party this weekend too. I doubt anyone will ask, but if they do I plan to just say that I'm not drinking yet because no one wants their food prepared by a drunk a hostess.

  • We went to a restaurant last weekend and cranberry and club soda worked perfectly with a lime wedge. Looked just like a vodka cranberry and all I did was pretended to go to the bathroom and found my waitress and told her what was up.

  • I also like club soda and lime juice or limeade. It looks like a fresh margarita and it's so good.

You can also say that you're on antibiotics and can't drink if anybody notices. Have fun!
  • My friends and family would know immediately if I didn't drink from a Bud Light bottle.  I think I'm going to go with that I am on an antibiotic for a sinus infection that just won't go away

  • Congratulations on your degree! Ditto on just drinking something...I also did a lot off drink switching with dh (I would accept an offered glass, carry it around and make him occasionally drink some out switch glasses :)

Or wrap a koozie around it and fill it with ginger ale!

My sister-in-law got married this past weekend - so I did the fake drink thing.

I did Sprite with a lime and told people it was gin & tonic.  It seemed to do the trick (nobody said anything to me at least).
  • I have a bunch of parties in the next few weeks. I'm debating telling MIL so that she can just make me some virgin drinks at the family parties. Her birthday is Saturday so it will be very early but I may do it an early bday surprise.

I would make a non-alcoholic punch/drink and sip on that all night. That way you at least have something in your hand and it's not obvious it's non-alcoholic.

That said, I'm going out to eat with one of my uncle's tonight at a steakhouse and it will be pretty obvious when I don't order some red wine.
I ordered vodka/soda minus the vodka at a wine bar. I felt like it was pretty obvious too.

  • I normally drink vodka sodas, so now I just grab a club soda with a lime wedge. No one's the wiser. ;)

  • I love how tricky you all are! This may be easier than I though. Although, my SILs will be wise to my tricks, I'm thinking. Oh well. I will try my best to be tricky and make my own drinks!
  • I drink out of empty bottles with koozies on them.

  • My sister is here and I'm keeping it a secret until Sunday. Here's what I did... I had half a bottle of red wine left. I just dumped it out, and rinsed the bottle out. Then I poured in non - alcoholic wine in there instead. It looks like the real thing. And she doesn't drink red wine so I don't have to worry about her tasting it.

I have the same problem! Going to the beach this weekend with 2 couples that we are good friends with. I have gone through all the options in my head of how to fake it but when it comes down to it, just the 6 of us in a 2 bedroom condo for 4 days... I don't think we will escape without anyone noticing. We may just have to fess up, which I'm freaking out about since I had a mc in January. My husband says it won't be the end of the world if 4 close friends end up knowing... Doesn't make it any easier!

@EmilyD76‌ I think you will be able pull off faking it if you're expecting a larger group of people and are also going to be playing hostess! Good luck :) and congrats on your Doctorate, that's awesome!

@cpoggio‌ I'm definitely going your route with the weddings we have coming up!
  • I just found out as well and it's KILLING me that no one knows... well on one hand I think it's kind cool that i'ts a secret between hubby and I, but...

I'm going to my best friend's 30th this weekend and they are the type to be pretty out loud about it if I'm not drinking...

I'm not sure what to do when theres a larger group of 10 people sitting at dinner and the waitress takes drink orders...?!!?

HELP! I don't think any of these tricks above work in my situation.
  • @jessah127‌ Yup! My liquor store had quite a few varieties. Most of them aren't very good and just taste like sweet juice, but the brand "fre" makes a red blend which is really good. I can *almost* pretend it's the real thing. ;)

Can you flag the waitress before hand or excuse yourself to the bathroom after the order and ask her privately to make your drink virgin?  We went out with friends to our usually trivia night right after we found out.  We just got to the bar alittle early.  I let the bartender in on our little secret and he made my usual drinks just kept the alcohol out and no one was any wiser to it.

Our friends kept us in the dark during a Super Bowl Party they hosted.  She just had a stash of Coors Light bottles filled with water.  So she had a bottle in her hand all night, just drinking water and we were none the wiser.
  • Funny note about the anti-biotics.  You can actually drink on some.  I didn't even know this until I got my latest set for an infection.  I asked my pharmicist the question since he didn't even mention drinking (even though it's a moot point), and he said no it didn't have any interactions with alcohol.  Thankfully my family doesn't know that :)

FI and I are getting married in two weeks.  I've just got N/A wine stashed away so I can have wine in my hand and family is none the wiser.  Too bad it doesn't taste as good...

  • Yeah but did they charge you less?
  • There are a few antibiotics out there that you can't drink with. Usually it's a secondary round after a first round hasn't cleared up the infection. I took one once and had communion wine, never ever been sicker.
  • Congrats on the doctorate! Have fun at the party how ever you choose to hide it. Vodka cranberry without the vodka would work too.

  • Club soda with a slice of lime! The antibiotics excuse is a good one too... Might have to use that one myself this weekend!

    And congrats on your doctorate!!!

  • I poured an Non-alcoholic beer into a glass and sipped on it all night when we had friends over last week. Might be a bit harder this weekend when I am not at home, but I told my closest girl friend so hopefully she'll help me cover.

  • I always carry a full cup with me so no one has to offer me a drink or anything. Just fill it when no one is looking :)

  • First off congrats! So many things for you to celebrate right now :) My friends are all over it (watching my every move) and I have had a social event every weekend since I found out. I have done the fake drink thing at brunch ... Ordered a mimosa then traded it for juice . I have also gone for bottled beer dumped it when no on was looking and then filled it with water (dark bottle go course). We are waking for 12 weeks so I have 7 more weeks of hiding to go :/ so I may need a new idea or two. Thanks for the post! Good luck!

  • Last time I found out I was pregnant was the day before my birthday party.. And when my family does parties people are constantly making rounds of shots etc.. I ended up telling one friend so she could help me fake it.. Handing me "shots" shed obviously made alcohol free. Bad news - everyone pretty much figured it out by the end of the party anyways lol so good luck to you! Other than that get together though I kept the secret through the holidays. People don't stare at you to make sure you are really drinking from a beer bottle like we think they do haha.
  • I ended up telling family only so they could help me out. One of my friends' husband was all over me about what I was drinking and he was the one who outed me on the first two kids. Pretty sure he is on to me, but no one else really bothered me. Boy was I tired yesterday, though. It was a long day visiting and walking and standing. Laid low yesterday and trying to get back at it today.
