Sitting on their own?

D sat all by herself last week, but today all she does is sit. My biggest problem is that she still launches herself backwards. For right now Im trying to throw a boppy around her once she sits. I was just wondering are the other sitters still falling backwards. Does it get better? I'm scared to even go to the bathroom.

Re: Sitting on their own?

  • I never leave dd alone if she's sitting.  It is still so unpredictable at this point.  Usually, I'll lay her down on the floor if I need to leave the room for anything.  I'm sure it will get better.  It's still new to them.

The problem is if I lay her down she goes and sits right away again. So basically need to start throwing her in her jumper I guess.

  • DS is sitting now and I'm so glad but I refuse to leave him alone sitting. I will let him sit in his bed while I go pee. That way if he falls it's all mattress.
  • Hmm... I never really thought about it.  I guess if she fell from sitting there's only so much damage that can be done, and she'll learn quickly. Yesterday she was all over the living room & kitchen while I was cooking dinner. I kept an eye on her, but wasn't watching her like a hawk.

This makes me sound like a terrible mom...  lol
We supervise, but we have had some tumbles. We say kaboom when she hits her head on something. She only cries is she is tired or hits something fairly hard.

No not at all. If we never let them do anything; they would never learn. I'm not so worried about falling side to side. She has her arm to slow herself down. When she falls straight back it sounds like her head hits really hard. Then she cries like a maniac. I'm often right there when it happens. I usually try and stop her fall.

  • My LO is getting better at sitting, I use the boppy as well. When I'm not around I usually lay her down on her back as she can't sit up from laying down yet.

  • For the most part DS will sit without falling but when he starts to get tired he falls backwards, to the side, and frontwards so I have to watch him. I put pillows behind him and to his side if he falls over.

  • We have to put our little guy into a sit and he's steady for the most part. I put a few throw pillows along his back in case he falls backwards if I'm not right there. He usually gets a kick out of it. Little girl doesn't sit on her own yet.

  • It definitely gets better... And then they scoot/crawl/spin and pull up on allthethings. DD fell over less than 10 times and hit her head and then she learned to catch herself. I used to out a pillow circle around her because I didn't know which way she would fall.

  • DD isn't really falling over anymore except occasionally when reaching for something in front of her. When she was tipping backwards, I just put a pillow behind her - not to prop, but to cushion the fall. If she does fall over or face plant, I just say "boom!" or "bada boom, big boom!" She laughs. I think they go by your reaction, unless it really did hurt.

She does face plants just fine. It's the falling backwards. The back of her head hitting the floor. It shakes so I imagine it scares her more that "hurts". I don't react to it. I just pick her up and talk to her. I do think she is cry baby though.

Mine throws herself backwards in the tub.  Talk about terrifying! I have a mini heart attack everytime.  It's not like the water is deep, but still.
  • LO has been sitting alone for awhile.  He crashes sometimes because he tries to do so much at once or will try to reach too far.  They are going to tumble and fall, and they will learn.  We used to do the Boppy or a pillow around him, but he crawls too much to keep chasing him around with a pillow.  He has learned to turn if he is falling to avoid hitting his head.

Yup - she still throws herself backwards.  I just put a pillow behind her so she doesn't bean her head.

Jack started sitting at around 5.5 months. I still put a boppy pillow behind him. He has learned to "catch" himself  though, but I won't stray too far from him. However, I think I might be the definition of a helicopter mom....lol.

  • DD still falls over sometimes. I put a rolled up blanket around her, a few inches out (so it's not as close as the boppy) that cushions the fall. She still falls over, but doesn't smash her head. She's even learning how to sit herself back up now. It's working for us.

  • @Jalee85: You are writing my life with these posts! I am a fairly tough girl, and I am realizing that my boy is a total momma's boy cry baby. I try to pass off his falls but he won't let me. What is worse is that I have seen him ignore the same type of head bonks when he is playing with his daddy, but the second he sees me he turns up the waterworks.

LO sits up fine and can even get into a sitting position on his own. He does fall back or to the side when he tries to reach out at times or arches his back to hold something above him.
  • DD has been sitting up on her own for a while and she's already crawling and sitting from crawling, but when she was not doing all those things, I put her in the pack-n-play sitting. Ours its pretty forgiving at the bottom…kinda springy. Plus there are the mesh sides, so if she fell over, I wasn't worried about her bonking her head. My mom actually recommended to get her used to it because once they are very mobile, its nice to have some place to put them while you pee or have to leave the room. We leave a million toys in there with her so she has lots to play with.

    "El gizzo"? Wut.

My baby used to throw himself backwards, so I would set him up with the boppy, and a stuffed animal behind to cushion his little head. He doesn't do that anymore, it does get better. Now he mostly goes forward to try to crawl. Lately I'm more worried about a forward face-plant
