Rubbing eyes

My LO has always rubbed his eyes occasionally (when he gets tired) but lately he has started doing it more & more & also in his sleep. He is often restless in his sleep because of this (?) He has incredibly long lashes and I'm wondering if that is part of it. Anyone else's LO?

Re: Rubbing eyes

  • Dd rubs hers when she's tired. She also has long lashes. My first thought for your ds is dryness/allergies. Are they red? Look irritated? Have you found a lash?

  • DS also has super long lashes but will only rub his eyes when he's sleepy. I would check allergies and maybe if something has gotten in there?

  • Mine made herself cry yesterday from rubbing too hard. She was really tired. But it stops once she starts falling asleep.
  • DS does this but we figured a lot of it os because he had a blocked tear duct up until he was 6 months old. Now he does it when he gets sleepy.
  • Thank you for the comments! I have never found a lash, & they don't ever look red. He rubbed so hard one day his bottom lid folded into his eye and I had to slightly pull down on his upper cheek to get it back out! :( I've consulted his doctor who states that he is "too young" for allergies. Legit?

I will keep a look out for lashes that may be irritating his eyes. He does have an issue with a semi blocked tear duct, but only one eye & I hoped it was clearing up after antibiotics. It looks great, but it could be returning I suppose! Ugh. I know something is bothering him but I can't figure it out!

  • DS rubs his eyes a lot too, even when not tired. I'm taking DD to the pedi later this afternoon, so I'll try to remember to ask her about this while we're there. I was thinking allergies too, so it will be interesting to see what she says.

D rubs her eyes so hard she has left bruises. Her lower lids are always red. Everyone thinks that she is always tired or sick. She mostly does it when she gets tired.

  • My LO started rubbing his a lot harder lately but he does it when he's tired. He makes them water. Sometimes he does in his sleep as well but it's not as hard.

  • I asked the pedi about this today during my 4 yo's appointment. She said it's probably because LO is tired or it's just self soothing. She also said it's hard to diagnose allergies in a baby younger than one, so if I still have concerns about that, we will discuss at LO's one year appointment.
