Grave's Disease XP

Good morning!
Three months post partum I was diagnosed with Grave's Disease. They ruled out post-partum thyroiditis and given a strong family history with labs this was my diagnosis. I am seeing an endocrinologist and she said I have three options 1. anti-thyroid medication short-term 2. surgical removal of thyroid gland 3. radioactive iodine.

For now I chose to take methimzole 10 mg each day and according to my doctor and a couple of other resources it is generally considered safe for breastfeeding moms, although right on the bottle it says "do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding" so of course that worried me- I chose to still take it although it worries me. we are going to my daughter's 4 month well baby check today and I will discuss this with the pediatrician to see if he has any suggestions or thinks drawing her labs would be helpful.

Has anyone else experienced this condition? What did you do?
I am really looking towards alternative methods of treatment (nutrition, chiropractor, supplements, etc.) but I am conflicted about what is right/wrong and what to/ not to believe. I am looking for a more natural way of dealing with this instead of just a medication or surgery.

Thank you

  • I have no experience, but I will say that a lot of medications say that as a general catch all/CYA sort of thing. Even Fenugreek, known to be taken to boost milk supply says that. So if your doctor said it's ok, I'd think it's ok. Also: https://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/aap-approved-meds/

I'm generally the kind of person who prefers not to take medication if it's an option, however I would really urge you to make sure you really discuss everything with an endocrinologist, and certainly please do not make any decisions about medication without doctor approval. I know it's concerning taking medication while bf-ing, but Graves Disease is not something to mess around with, and as @sugarland726 said, pretty much every medication has a warning label for pregnant and breastfeeding women as a precaution against lawsuits.  Check out the link on Kellymom, and also I would call up your OB and discuss this with them as well.

Good luck, I hope you are feeling better now that you are on medication!

  • I had Graves' disease. I opted for radioactive iodine. This was about a year and a half before we got pregnant though, so no help with breastfeeding & meds.

I take synthroid every day and I have them check my levels every 3 months. So far it's been almost 2 &1/2 years and everything has been going well for me.
