infant neck float?

this chick on my fb posted a picture of a baby with a neck float.. and is getting comments in support of this crazy ass contraption. I can't wrap my head around how this is safe and how someone would think there are really no other options to float your baby in a pool.

The pic isn't the one she posted for privacy reasons.. so I found an Asian baby to go with today's hot topic.

Hi! I have one, I don't use it. It scares me, but a lot of my family and (Asian) friends have used one. Super common/normal.

  • I only liked it because you said #Asian. I wouldn't use it.

Problem with this: it will float your baby upside down as easily as right side up. I am wary of all pool floaties that are not coast guard approved and appropriately adjusted. I feel they give parents a false sense of security that the child is protected, then they don't watch as closely as they should. That's my biggest concern with this.

FWIW, these are *not* made for the pool, they are made for bath time play.

this makes way more sense. i can see it being helpful with a baby sitting up in the tub, to help keep the baby's head out of the water if he/she slips, but not to hold baby up in a pool.

-- Yep, it's made to keep the head out of the water while sitting and/or slightly leaning back. Can you imagine hanging by your neck in the floating device? No thank you!! Chinese (and probably most other Asians, but I can't say for sure) have this strange fear of being cold, and getting your hair wet is said to let cold energy into your body.. It's an easy way to submerge the body in warm water, but keep head dry, therefore staying warm.

@jennlin must ask how does it work for washing your hair then? Do they just do it as little as possible. Learning about other cultures is so much fun!

And here I thought you're only supposed to use two inches or so of water in the tub. Silly me. Next time DD gets a bath I will be filling that sucker up like it's a swimming pool!

ETA Beau still uses the Tummy Tub. I could see this helping. Hands free for me and also a splash protector. *rolls eyes*

Yep, minimal hair washing. My mom and mil wash their hair once a week. And when they do, they blow dry like crazy.

  • very interesting. I feel better knowing it's not meant for a pool float, but it scares me people use it that way!

@jennlin when I worked with SEA they would shave their infants head...is it the same in the Chinese culture?

yup! we shave at their 1-month birthday. it's said to grow back darker and thicker....i however, did not, because it's-my-baby's-hair-and-how-dare-you-suggest-getting-rid-of-it. for both my kids, we just did a ceremonial snipping of a little pinch of hair from the back.

  • We got an otteroo it's great LO loves it - instructions say to be right next to them (of course). seriously adorable and their little bodies weigh essentially nothing in the water so it's all gravy! I thought it was crazy, too, at first glance....but have converted!!! ;)
