Vent (sad): failed my 1 hour glucose test

Just got a call from my OB's office and they said that I failed my 1 hr glucose test. I believe she said it came in at 159. I told her that I had actually fasted for the test (even though I wasn't told to) and she (nurse) said then it is probably likely that I actually do have gestational diabetes. I'm SOS scared now just sitting here crying. I always suspected that I actually had GD with my second child...I had failed the one hour, passed the 3 hour, but then had a 9 lb 10 oz baby (I also always gain about 60 lbs when pregnant). I'm just feeling sorry for myself because I feel like there is a lot going against me (hypothyroidism, over 35, and now possibly having GD) I feel like this poor baby won't be healthy because of all my additional risks...sorry to ramble on...just wanted someone to vent to. Thanks for listening...

Re: Vent (sad): failed my 1 hour glucose test

  • I'm soo sorry you are going through this. I know how you feel, I failed my one hour test this past Monday. Are you now going to take the 3 hour test? I've noticed that a great number of people have failed the one hour and passed the three hour so I am trying to stay optimistic.

However if you do fail the 3 hour test and they diagnose you with GD, that does not mean your baby won't be healthy... actually quite the opposite. I had to be so strict with my diet during my first pregnancy (diagnosed with GD, failed the test by 1 point) that I felt assured that my baby was even healthier, plus they run more tests on you weekly at one point to make sure that your baby is fine.
The upside to me having GD the first time is I barely gained any weight during my pregnancy!

I know it's stressful and disappointing and hard to get used to but whatever the outcome you will be ok!

I am sorry that you have additional worries.  I understand that the diet is hard but it will be better for both you and the baby if you end up with GD.  Also like wildflower said, the extra monitoring will give you some reassurance that things are ok.

FX crossed for better results for the 3 hour test.

  • Having GD sucks, but a lot of people find that with the diet (which, actually is not too bad! It's way less difficult than a low-calorie diet!), they don't gain a lot of weight in pregnancy. It is true that diabetes (real diabetes moreso than GD) is a horrible disease, but if you educate yourself and take control you will more than likely end up healthier at the end. And, you're right, it sounds like you probably had it during your last pregnancy. I think it's much better to fail the test by a couple points and be able to take care of your growing baby than to squeeze past by a couple points and harm your baby because you do develop it later. I failed my 1-hour with my daughter at something like a 180 - I did the diet diligently, only gained a total of 6 actual pounds (lost a lot of water weight the week she was born and was left with 6 to lose), and she was healthy, full-term, and weighed 7.5 lbs. She's now a lean, healthy little 21-month-old with the language skills of an almost 3-year-old. I'm confident that my GD didn't harm her. You'll be ok, it's not that bad, and I know you'll do everything you need to do to keep your baby safe and healthy. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about this or vent. I cried for several days when I was diagnosed the first time - I understand that it's a rough diagnosis. Good luck!

  • Thank you ladies. Ido feel a lot better now. I think I just had a huge rush or emotions and just let it all out. I did read that a lot of ladies fail the 1 hour (even after fasting) and then go on to pass the 3 hour...but, after thinking about it I'd rather not pass the 3 hour and have access to a nutritionist, extra testing than possibly having undiagnosed GD (really feel thats what happened with my second pg). Well, I go in tomorrow for the 3 hour so I'll see what happens. Thanks again. Just feeling alone here and it means a lot to hear your kind words of encouragement :)

  • I know it must be really overwhelming to get that call from your doctor.  I am a Type 1 Diabetic and when I first found out I was pregnant, I had the HARDEST time figuring out what I could eat, how much I could eat.. I didn't want to do anything to hurt the baby, so I was also almost too afraid to eat anything at times.  The beginning was really hard for me and made me want to never get pregnant again and wish for this pregnancy to be over as soon as possible.

Fast forward a few weeks and my blood sugars are the best they have ever been and I'm so proud of myself for being able to overcome the challenge and instead of saying, nope, I can't do this, I'm telling myself what a good job I'm doing.

Following the diet will be hard, but not impossible and you can definitely do it and you WILL do it!  Both you and your baby will be healthier in the end!  And also, look at it this way, at least you don't have to continue dealing with it after your sweet baby is born.  :)

  • I know how you feel. I found out this week that I failed my one-hour test. I'm so not looking forward to the three-hour test, but I'm trying to remain optimistic about it all. I want what's best for me and baby.

Just wanted to add my voice to PP. I remember feeling AWFUL when I found out that I had failed my 1 hour test with my first pregnancy. But once you get over the initial shock, it really isn't too bad. Yes, it does suck to follow the diet and yes it does suck to check your blood sugar all the time but lots of women have GD and go on to have perfectly healthy babies. Once you get educated on what you can and cannot eat, it's actually a little satisfying to be able to know that the diet you are following is keeping your blood sugar on track. And it really does help keep weight gain in check. We have a weekly GD check in on this board with recipes etc. so if you do end up being diagnosed with GD, we will be happy to have you!

  • Oh I'm sorry that call must have been a shock. Reading all the comments above I hope made you feel better I love all the great advise everyone gives and words of encouragement. Take care and try to not worry so much hugs !!
  • Sorry you have to go through the 3 hour test.  Remember to bring some juice and/or something to eat immediately after the test as you will be starving!

When I found out I was pregnant, I moved to a mostly GD diet in preparation of probably being diagnosed (already pre-diabetic, AMA, hypoglycemia, and PCOS).  While it was an adjustment at first (eating 6 times a day), it has helped with sugar crashes and keeping blood sugars even.

    Married 10/06

Baby Girl "C" arrived on 10/07/14 (39 weeks, 6 days)

  • My OB made you fast even for the 1hr. I had a 179 last time... Passed the 3hr no problems.

It doesn't mean you will have GD

I hope you do well on the 3hr test. I know it's hard work to adjust to new dietary rules and to checking your blood sugar all the time, and I don't wish it on anyone. But I always like to think of my diabetes as a positive motivator to stay on top of my diet and fitness. I always get comments from people about how healthy I eat and how amazed they are that I get up before work to go to the gym every day. My long-term health is that important to me, and now that I'm pregnant, keeping my blood sugar under even tighter control is even more important. That's not to say I don't find ways to enjoy my food! It's all about quality. :)

  • Just curious. For those with GD do you have to test your blood every day? I took my 3 hour test this morning and just trying to mentally prepare if I fail. Can't imagine sticking myself in the finger daily, I get so squeamish over the smallest things! Jus wondering if I could get out of it if my levels are even borderline...I'm sure I'm just wishful thinking though. Thanks!

I test 4 times a day. Just depends on the doctor and bs levels.
