How much does LO eat?

How much does your LO eat? Do you cut them off or let them eat until they stop? I feel like my LO is a bottomless pit. He will finish a Gerber toddler meal no problem. DH and my sister are concerned that he is being overfed. We are battling a pretty nasty case of diarrhea right now and my DH thinks its because LO eats too much. We have not given LO anything that he has not had before and I usually just give him the food he wants (with in reason of course) so I was just curious how much other babies are eating now. (LO just turned 11 months on Saturday and has pretty much eaten solid finger foods since 7 months.)

It really depends on the day and what he's eating. Here's a sample day: For breakfast, one piece of toast and a scrambled egg. For lunch, up to 1/2 cup of veggies and 1/2 cup fruit (might not eat all that.) For dinner, some spaghetti, like 5-6 small pieces of chicken, and some peppers.

  • LO doesn't eat a whole lot at once yet, but everything I have read has said that babies will stop eating on their own once they are full and you can't really over feed them. However, I don't know what age that stops applying.

  • My little guy is a big eater. He still nurses every 3-4 hours starting from when he wakes up at 7am till bed around 7pm so about 4-5 nursing sessions. He also eats 3 full meals on most days

    Today for example:

Breakfast- a waffle and a whole banana

Lunch- Blueberries, yogurt and some chicken

Afternoon snack- veggie sticks and kix cereal

Dinner- We're having tacos so he will probably have a little of all of it (tortilla, meat, cheese, beans)

  • I really don't know how much we feed B. I just know we keep offering food throughout the day and give him as much as he wants until he refuses it. It's the only way we can get him to sleep through the night. I'm also of the opinion that we are not yet at the age where B can be overfed.
  • 3-4 nursing sessions per day and 3 meals.  She is not a big breakfast eater.  Today was a typical day for her:
Breakfast: 1/2 slice of toast, 2 sliced strawberries
Lunch: Ella's veggie pouch, cubed turkey, cubed cheese, 1 T quinoa
DInner: tuna noodle casserole (maybe 2 T), 1/4 banana

    Haven't gotten into snacks yet.

I'm not too much help since LO throws half (if not more) of his food on the floor for the dogs to eat - so I'm not sure how much he actually eats.

I've been looking into the caloric requirements for toddlers, and the general rule of thumb is 40 calories/inch of height.  I don't know if that helps you at all.

I've also read that at around one year of age, kids that previously were great eaters suddenly become picky and don't eat much due to the huge slow-down in growth that's going on.  So it could be that your LO is working on a growth spurt and will slow down the pace before you know it.

All that being said, I'd let your LO eat until they're not interested anymore.  I don't think they'll stuff themselves silly at this age.

  • DD eats all the things. She still has 24-30 oz of formula in 4 bottles through the day.

She eats breakfast at daycare - usually a rotation of grits, oatmeal, Cheerios, pancake, French toast sticks, bagel, or english muffin. It is always paired with a fruit.

Lunch is also at daycare - ranges from turkey and cheese sandwich, meatloaf, spaghetti, baked chicken, turkey breast, pizza, hamburger, etc. it is always served with a starch (mashed potatoes, corn, bread, etc), a veggie, and a fruit.

Afternoon snack is also at daycare - yogurt, cheese and crackers, string cheese, broccoli, goldfish, animal crackers, etc.

She also gets another light snack of puffs right before I pick her up.

Dinner is usually what we eat or a banana and mixed veggies.

She eats all of the above. Every day. She's a chunk.

I don't worry about over eating at this age. They need fat to thrive. In a fee years, she will even out and start getting picky. I'll worry about it then. I will usually only cut her off at dinner if it's getting close to bedtime. I still want her to drink her bottle.

The loose stools could be a reaction to what he's eaten, teeth, or just a thing he has. I think he's ok. But that's just my opinion. ;)

This is exactly same for my LO as well who eats a lot at home and daycare.

  • Vinny eats like a horse. I pretty much give him one container (single cup thing) of greek yogurt and a fruit for breakfast or fresh fruit and oatmeal.
Snack usually cheerios before morning nap.
Lunch is leftovers from dinner or fruit and cheese.
afternoon snack is generally puffs or crackers.
Dinner is generally what we eat.
I usually stop feeding him when he starts to throw the food on the floor or I feel like he should be full.I stopped measuring his food a while ago. He loves to eat and DH says the same thing that we feed him too much, but he's growing constantly at this age.

Thanks ladies it sounds like he is eating about the same as most of your LOs. I wasn't too worried and was also under the impression that they can't be over fed. I told my sister and dh I would ask my June girls. Dh is more relaxed now that I read him all your posts!

  • I used to stop giving her food whenever she began tossing it on the floor because I assumed it meant she was done eating.

I've since determined she also throws food when she gets bored of something. I can basically always get her to eat more if I give her more fruit or Gerber yogurt bites. This kid loves her fruit. She can easily eat an entire banana after her dinner.

I do no measuring and don't really pay too much attention to quantity. That being said she can eat a lot when she feels like it.
  • DD used to eat a so much. I only cut her off at dinner and that was only if she had already eaten an almost adult size portion. I was mostly just worried about her having a stomach ache at night. Now it looks like we have hit the picky eating less phase less. It sucks :(

  • N eats about a cup of either oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast, with some fresh fruit. For lunch she typically has some more fruit and some kind of healthy fat - yesterday she had an avocado, a banana, a few cut up grapes, and a strawberry. For dinner she has some Cheerios as an appetizer to tide her over while I finish getting everything ready. Then she eats what we do. Yesterday she had a small bowl of spaghetti with a few spinach leaves. The day before she had about 1/4 of my fish and two baby bok choy. Typically I just fill her high chair tray with food and she eats most all of it.

I'm thinking I'm going to start rounding out her lunches a bit better and add a protein.

She's drinking 20-24 oz of formula as well.

    Here's her regular eating schedule:
8am- 1/4-1/2 of a waffle, 6-7 small pieces of fruit, small sippy cup of milk/water/juice
11am- handful of a snack (lil crunchers/cheerios/gold fish)
12- 4oz bottle of wcm or formula
1pm- 2 oz piece of chicken with half cup of sliced fruit/veggies w/ sippy cup of water/juice/milk
    4pm- 4 oz bottle wcm
7pm- whatever we're eating that night, last night it was savory crepes with mushroom, spinach and cheese. I probably gave her 1/4 of one.
    8pm- 8oz bottle of formula.
MOTN- 3 oz bottle of wcm

She's 65% for height, 50% for weight, and is very active (walking pretty much every second she's awake). My guess is she's now 30 inches and 20.5lbs.

I wouldn't worry about over feeding. Just as long as your giving him healthy things, it'll be fine. If DD had diarrhea the only thing I would change is maybe giving her some yogurt to soothe her tummy, and give her as much fluids as she wants. I hope he gets better soon!

  • We did baby led weaning starting many months ago and now she will eat pretty much whatever we are eating. Last night she had a slice of pizza, some salad, a few pitted cherries, WCM.  For breakfast she had a banana and some full fat plain yogurt.  For lunch she's going to have a turkey & cheese sandwich, some roasted broccoli leftovers from 2 nights ago, and a sliced pear. Last doctor appointment had her at just above the 80th percentile for height and around the 55th for weight.

  • B eats a ton - and he is a very slow eater, so meal time takes a long time up in our household.  He still drinks about 24-30 oz of formula. Foodwise, breakfast is his weakest meal - during the week, he just has a little fruit and some cheerios.  On the weekends we add a scrambled egg as well.  Lunch is cut up chicken, veggies, fruit and some kind of starch (goldfish, cheerios, bread).  And dinner is pasta, chicken, veggies, fruit and cheese.  IF we are eating something baby-friendly, he has some of that instead.
