Just had my third HSG and now I feel like being done with all this. :(

My first HSG in I don't know, 2008?? Was clear and fine. Second one in 2013 was impacted by my fibroids. RE looked at my tubes when I had surgery last year in July and said they looked okay. Well I did my third one today which was after the wtf consult and prepping for IVF.

It hurt a little today and it looks like both tubes are blocked. One is a regular blockage and the other does something weird where it widens and is like plugged up near the end. RE says I need a laparoscopy to repair the tube and that it could have been caused by either adhesions or endometriosis. It hasn't even been a year since my last surgery. I asked about just going straight to IVF since I don't need tubes for that but because of the type of blockage I have on that one side he is afraid it would leak into the uterus or something like that which would not be okay. So basically in order to move forward I have to have surgery again.

I don't regret having surgery last year and have recommended it to others even though I was so afraid of it at the time. (It was also becoming necessary regardless of wanting a pregnancy or not since the fibroids were so big). But I can't imagine having to go through with ANOTHER one and then what?? We haven't even paid off the anesthesiologists from the first one. We've paid what we can here and there to just be able to move forward with treatment.

I feel sick right now and my immediate thoughts are that I'm done. I'm not doing this anymore. Obviously I need to think it through but I just feel like this is not meant to be for me. Feeling sort of heart broken right now. It feels similar to that first consult when I was told I needed surgery and then I put it off for more than two years!

Anyone else have to have multiple surgeries? I may have to wander over to PAIF to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

Ugh and I scheduled myself a therapy client for after the HSG knowing physically I'd feel fine. I honestly didn't expect anything to be wrong so I figured emotionally I'd be fine.

It sounds like your doctor thinks you have hydrosalpinx (the fluid build up). I ended up getting 2 different diagnoses from my one hsg (as you can see in my sig). When we met with the RE and talked about IVF she said we would still need to do the surgery first (she suspected hydrosalpinx, and the fluid can be toxic to an embryo, so I went in expecting them to take my tube away). It was only because I had surgery that she found that tube-wise I'm good, and cleaned out (unexpected) endo.
So, long story short, it definitely sucks that you have to have surgery again so soon after your other surgery, but maybe it will show something good in the end. I'm sorry that your IVF cycle didn't work.

Thank you so much this info. I looked up hydrosalpinx and that really sounds exactly like what we saw at the HSG today and what he said for causes and treatment. I am going to go ahead and schedule a consult to discuss doing surgery. (Within the last few hours since this appointment I've decided I must move forward with it). I am afraid that I may have endo or scar tissue that caused it. How was the laparoscopy? I did a robotic one last year and was in surgery for 5 1/2 hours so I figure it'll be easier, but still I'm worried about it!

I'm so sorry that you have been referred to surgery twice. Not only does it suck, but if your insurance wont cover it, it can turn into a huge financial burden.

Last year I ended up having to have laparoscopic surgery twice. Once diagnosed my fibroids, the second (robotic) to remove my monster fibroid. The first was in July, and the Second in October. So my surgeries were within 3 months of each other, but I'm glad I did it in the end, and have been back in tip top shape since New Years. The part that sucked the most for me was being benched for 4 months to heal. Since then I have been cleared to cycle and my body has been behaving great (except for the whole IVF underresponse thing). But at this point my RE is very happy with my bodies condition and confident that when we finally get an egg to fertilize, it should stick!

As for the diagnosis, it does sound like hydrosalpinx, and if so, you will be better off having it removed as the fluid from the damaged tube can travel into the uterus causing a toxic environment for any healthy embryos that try to implant.

I wrote a bit about my experience here: Post-Lap post. Mine was not robotic, and my RE performed the surgery. I don't think I could have asked for a better experience. All the staff were great, from check-in and beyond.
