Breastfeeding

supply drop 2 weeks before 1st birthday - What would you do?

So...I planned on weaning at a year. LO is literally 2 weeks away from his first birthday. And, out of nowhere, my supply is taking a sudden drop. I usually drop at O and with AF, then rebound. No rebound this time. I usually have 2 pumping sessions at work and this matches perfectly with his daycare needs. I can usually get 12-14oz. Not anymore. Today I barely eeked out 10oz. This has been going on for 2 weeks now. We've burned through almost all of the freezer stash and my supply hasn't come back up. (Also, there's no chance I'm pregnant). So now I'm trying to figure out if I want to add an extra pumping sessions (thus increasing my supply when I know I will wean in 2 weeks), OR buy some formula for the first time ever, OR just say screw it and supplement with whole cow's milk a couple weeks early.

To add to the WTFness of this whole mess, I had serious over-supply problems early on. I collected roughly 250oz which I donated to a milk bank. Now I only have enough in the freezer for 3 bottles, in case my husband is in a pinch and needs to give one. I was still over-producing until about a month ago, then I started producing exactly what he needed, and now not enough. I really don't understand my body sometimes.

On the good side, huh, the baby weight is finally coming off now that my body doesn't want to store everything in case there's a famine while I'm BFing.

  • I would also start the WCM transition assuming everything else is ok with LOs weight and growth.

  • I was leaning towards supplementing with WCM but wanted to hear it from other moms! I figured that if he was born a few weeks early, we'd already be doing it.

  • The same thing happened to me too when DS was almost 1.  I SAH so it wasn't as big as a deal but I was a bit stressed out at that time.  In your case, I'd just start WCM a little early and not bother with formula!  Or, if your DS eats yogurt, you can try increasing the amount he eats?  GL and congrats on making it to 1 year.  It was really wonderful of you to donate your BM ...  I'm sure the babies and moms who needed the BM really appreciated it.
