Two Amniotic Sacs...

So I had my first ultrasound at 8 wks and just had my first appt with my new OB at 12 weeks. Due to the type of insurance I have and the fact that I'm considered low risk, my ultrasounds have to be done at a different location than my OB's office. It also just so happens that my doctor only had access to the radiologist's report rather than the actual ultrasound images which adds to the frustration. In the radiologist's notes, he indicated that two amniotic sacs were present but they didn't see two embryos. My doc wants me to get another ultrasound just to verify that I am in fact only having one baby. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Did it turn out to be just one baby or two? If there was only one baby, did the additional sac cause any complications? I'm worried, confused, anxious, and all around impatient for my next appointment. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Two Amniotic Sacs...

  • They didn't tell you anything about the two sacs when you had the ultrasound? I'm confused.

If you were having twins I would think they would say "Congrats! It's twins!"

  • With my son there were two sacs, but one baby never developed. I'm high risk so I got tons of ultrasounds. It just 'absorbed' is the best way to describe it I guess. It caused no issues at all.

You know, come to think of it.... I just realized that could have been what caused the bleeding for me early on with him. I started bleeding at 9 weeks and bled til 16. Drs said it was just a massive blood clot that was resting on my cervix. Now I wonder if that's actually what it was.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to scare you. But again, there was no threat to my DS, drs said it happened sometimes that twins were conceived but one just never developed, kinda like a blighted ovum for one. If there was a huge concern, your dr would have made an emergency appnt for you. I would try not to worry too much, we as preggos have enough to think about and worry about as it is. Praying for ya!

  • Could be a vanishing twin. That can cause bleeding. Shouldn't bother the other baby.

If you get another ultrasound at the same place, I would ask for a copy of the images from both ultrasounds. They will give you that. Then you can take them to your ob so he can see them.

  • I haven't had any bleeding and the ultrasound tech didn't say anything about there being two sacs which is why i was so confused when I visited my OB. I'll make sure to get a copy of the images this time and have also given the organization the feedback that this has not been a patient friendly experience. I feel a lot better hearing that the second sac won't pose any problems to the baby we definitely know exists :) Thanks ladies!
  • I had a vanishing twin and a sac that never had anything inside.  They are still in the process of being reabsorbed.  I did have spotting for awhile and a few bleeding scares, probably a result of the other two non-viable sacs pulling from the uterine wall.
