GTKY--Embarrassing Purchase Edition

The discussion about buying pregnancy tests got me thinking about other awkward shopping experiences, which I thought could make for some lightweight Tuesday afternoon entertainment.  What's the most embarrassing purchase (or in-store encounter) you're willing to share (TTC-related or not)?

Re: GTKY--Embarrassing Purchase Edition

  • 1. I've bought a truckload of pregnancy tests, Preseed, and related items, but never had a cashier say anything about it.

    2. When I was in my first year of grad school, I ran into one of my professors in the check-out line with nothing in my cart but a giant-size bottle (a jug, really) of Jim Beam and an enormous family-size pack of toilet paper.  He asked if I had a "big weekend" coming up.

    1.  The other day in Wal-mart, while unloading the cart, I realized I could be one of those "what are they thinking photographs," as there was a bottle of pre-natals right next to the bottle of wine on the conveyor belt.

    2.  In high school, I had to buy tampons and the only register opened was the one a guy in my math class was working.  So hard making conversation when you are totally self conscious.

@JimBobCooter‌ - Ugh. I can so easily see that scene. I bought a big sister book before our miscarriage, too. (I tucked it away, figuring either we'll need it or I will use it as a gift some day.). I imagine the cashier tells that story as one of her 'I felt so awful' moments, too. And that she paid more attention to just what was being returned after that.
  • @JimBobCooter, I'm so sorry.  Sometimes when I'm having a really hard time, an everyday annoyance like that can be absolutely the last straw.

@thiryninetoforty, that's too funny.  What did the person say?

@Austrogermokee, did any of the 53 things involve whipped cream?  And were you really supposed to do all of them in one night?  Cosmo must think its readers have a lot of time on their hands!

Thanks for these, everyone.  They're great!

  • Davie, I pictured myself hanging over the side of the bed with a flashlight and pen, scratching off each item as I completed them.
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....
  • **child mentioned**

I bought a box of condoms with DS in my Ergo on my chest. Slightly awkward but the drugstore cashier didn't blink an eye.

  • I ran into a classmate that I would chat it up with at a bookstore.  I was looking at psychology books (I was getting a degree in ed. psych.). He asked how it was going w/a recent guy I had been dating and I told him we had just ended things.  Then I realized I was surrounded by self-help books, it was kind of a funny situation.
  • About a year ago I went shopping with my 3 year old nephew, and I met a friend at the shop and was stood talking to her whilst my nephew put 16 packets of condoms into the basket without me noticing. So I went to the till, and in this certain shop, the cashier takes the stuff out of the basket and puts it straight into bags, so I didn't see what was going through, but she was giving me funny looks. So I've got this bag full of condoms, and Laire comes and picks us up, looks in the bag, laughs and started throwing them at me. She thought it was hilarious, I was humiliated.

@Pintobean39‌ - My husband just refused to have a 40th birthday party for fear of just this!
  • @Austrogermokee LMAO!  That was too funny!
@Davie813 his face got bright red and he walked away!
@JimBobCooter I can imagine wanted to get out as fast as possible.  I'm sure that girl learned to look at what the books are before stating she can't accept a return!

I bought some monostat and the male cashier said "it must be something in the water" thinking it was a HPT. I looked at him funny and just said "nope, just a yeast infection!" He mumbled something and was obviously embarrassed. Hope he learned a lesson about commenting on purchases!!

  • *loss related*   sorry, I have no light ones.

Last year when I was pg I went to Barnes and Noble and bought a copy of WTEWYE & a big brother book for DS.  It took me a a few weeks after my miscarriage to get to a space to return them.  When I did it was outside the allowed return window.  The cashier, who wasn't paying a it of attention to what the books were, told me she couldn't take them back and I burst into tears in front of a huge line of people.   She was completely thrown off then looked down and the books and said "Oh... Oh.... I... Of course we can take them back." She was so kind about it once she realized but I've never wanted to get out of a place so fast.

Holy crow, this totally breaks my heart. So sorry you went through this.

One time my purchases included some "fancy" lube that had been mislabled on the shelf. I was surprised by the total cost at checkout, and upon review, realized I didn't want to pay that much for lube, so I had to ask to remove it.

The 50-something cashier glanced at the box I handed her and said "hmm, what's that?" She paused to read it and simply said  "oh!" before quickly finishing that transaction. Without any additional commentary.
