general anesthesia

I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled in a couple weeks. From what I've found online it's fine to continue bfing as soon as I'm awake and aware again. Anyone have experience or know if that's true? I'll call my Dr closer to the appointment to double check just wondering if anyone on here knows.

    yes, it's fine. i think the biggest concern would be to make sure that you are fully alert and recovered before you nurse, since you will be woozy afterwards. but you should have someone there with you anyway, since you will have someone driving you home after the procedure.

    Drugs for local or regional anaesthesia are not absorbed from the baby’s stomach and are safe. Drugs for general anaesthesia will get into the milk in only tiny amounts (like all drugs) and are extremely unlikely to cause any effects on your baby. They usually have very short half lives and are eliminated extremely rapidly from your body. You can breastfeed as soon as you are awake and up to it.

    General anesthesia should not affect breastfeeding. You can safely nurse once you are awake and alert enough to hold your baby. By that time, the amount of medication in your bloodstream is low enough that the amounts in your milk would not be significant.

    I had general anesthesia last week for a dental procedure and found the same information as PP when I looked into in. I opted to pump and dump for a few hours after the procedure- DD was at daycare, so I had to pump anyway, I just didn't save the milk. I am a pharmacist and I know that is on the conservative side, but that is what I felt comfortable with. Also, your doctor may tell you to pump and dump for 24 hours- that's what mine said and I've heard the same from other people. In my opinion, that is a little extreme but I guess they are being extra cautious.

    Ok thanks! Makes me feel relieved. I've been trying to bulk up my stash cuz I was worried I was going to have to dump!
