MFM patients

edited May 2014 in October 2014 Moms
Is your MFM a case consultant (whether it be for level 2 ultrasound, invasive testing, etc.), or does s/he serve as your primary "ob services" provider?  I know that it's common to be referred to a MFM for co-morbidities, AMA, etc., but they seem to be a consultant rather than the primary.

Am I the only one who sees solely a MFM?

ETA for clarity.

I am co-managed by my family dr and MFM.  I know my MFM office does take over pregnancy care for some patients, but they are almost and hour and a half away from me, so it makes more sense for me to do regular pregnancy check ups with my dr in town.

My MFM will do my c/s though.

  • I solely see my MFM and have regular check ups with him.  I am a type 1 diabetic and don't see my PCP for anything diabetes related anyway, so because my diabetes makes me high risk, it only makes sense that I wouldn't see my primary doctor during pregnancy.

Plus, my insurance is really weird and my MFM is in a different network than my PCP, so all care has been transferred over to that network.

I solely see my midwife, but I see a MFM for fibroid check ultrasounds. I believe I'm an exception though, because I had to do my NT scan at the MFM (only place around here that does them) and my midwife decided to have me follow up with them throughout to ensure I can try a vaginal birth.

I'm co-managed by my MFM and my OB practices. My OB said it varies by state, and the OBs always handle the basics and the deliveries here. We seem to have very few MFMs in our fairly large metropolitan area, so I don't imagine there would be enough to handle all the high-risk patients throughout their pregnancies. Mine isn't even that interested in helping to manage my diabetes as long as I continue to keep it under good control.

  • I'm co-managed by my MFM and my OB.

I see my OB on the regular schedule (monthly until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 35 weeks, every week until delivery), and I saw my MFM for the NT scan and will go back to him for the lvl-2 anatomy scan at 20wks, and once monthly thereafter for lvl-2 ultrasounds until delivery, to monitor growth and placenta function.

  • I am also co-managed by my OB, who will handle my actual delivery unless an emergent situation arises, and my MFM for this twin pregnancy. I see each monthly right now, so one of them every two weeks.
