  • i eat turkey sandwiches about once a week. i usually have it toasted but not aways i don't think it's a big deal given the risks in so many other foods.

Don't beat yourself up. There are so many do's and don'ts of pregnancy it is hard to keep them all straight. FWIW I think turkey is fine- you're just suppose to stay away from deli dry sausages and like OP's said, there have been way more listeria outbreaks from lettuce.
It will be ok :) Try not to worry (and I totally get how hard it is not to)

    Edited: words are hard.
  • I did the same & posted about it in the Friday confession...I felt so guilty! I heated it up to kill anything that could be on it & I still felt bad lol. But everyone said it wasn't that big of a deal & pretty much for me to chill. Since then, I've eaten a cold turkey sub several times! I just don't do it every day & try to get it from a trustworthy place where I know it's freshly sliced (jersey mikes slices it right in front of me) so that's what I do now...I have it occasionally but try to be careful, & if it's at home, I heat up the meat :) don't worry!! :)

  • 3 pregnancies I have eaten deli meat with out cooking it. All 3 babies are perfectly healthy.

    Your baby will be fine!
  • I eat the shit out of deli meat and all of my kids are fine! I've never gotten sick from it :)

  • I crave deli meat when I'm pregnant probably because I'm not "allowed" to eat it. You will be fine!!! Think about our moms. They never knew half this stuff and didn't worry as much I'm sure. I definitely ate some cold chinese from the fridge tonight and it was GOOD! I also have had diet coke and caffeine here and there as well. I read on CDC website that the protocol for listeria in pregnancy is that you don't treat or test for it unless you have flu like symptoms within 2 months of eating it anyways.
  • I cautious about everything since I've had a loss but everybody has made a few slip-ups and everything tends to be fine. Don't stress, that's worse than a little bit of deli meat:)
BTW: now I'm craving a Subway sandwich at 11:30pm:((
  • About 4 or 5 weeks ago, I went through a deli meat phase where that was all I craved. I ate sliced chicken and provolone everyday for about 5 or 6 days straight. And this was all while knowing that it shouldn't be eating it. It happens. In the grand scheme of pregnancy, think of how many things we are supposed to stay away from, and then consider how many things we have aversions too. We'd starve if we didn't break the rules once in a while.

  • Uhmmm... Italian hoagie from the grocery supermarket EVERY DAY here... That's the only meat protein I can stomach now...
  • I eat a deli sandwich probably 2-3 times a week, sushi almost once a week, and I eat salads all the time. My Dr said not to change anything about my diet. She said to try and mix it up but to just eat what I feel like eating. I also never gave up coffee but it gave me up lol I sadly can't drink more than a cup a day or less now.

You will be fine. I'm sure my crib had lead based paint and the bars were spaced too far apart.

  • I asked my OB in the beginning about cold cuts and he pretty much laughed at me and said eat all of them.  Seriously, if you know where it's coming from and it's a reputable place that has a good turnover....sammy away!!!!

I also heard someone say that their doc told them to stay away from soft serve ice cream because there can be bacteria on the spout.  Uh, sorry.....if I want a milkshake momma's having a milkshake!

  • If it makes you feel better, i ordered cooked sushi a few weeks ago and totally forgot the orange things on the top were raw fish eggs! I ate 3 pieces with them before I freaked out.
  • Yep I totally eat deli meat every day.  Your chances of getting sick from deli meat are the exact same whether you're pregnant and I don't avoid it when I'm not pregnant.  I also drink tea and eat tons of chocolate.  The fear mongering about what is safe and what is not really bothers me - most of it is just using common sense.

On a related note, if any of you don't know about Pregnant Chicken's blog yet, google it.  She is AMAZING, and has a whole list of "is it safe or not" with actual common sense and a whole lot of humour mixed in.  Beware though - once you get started reading, you will do nothing else for the rest of the day.

If the place, like Sonic or McDonald's, doesn't clean their machines regularly it can be a breeding ground for listeria. That is actually the one crazy pregnancy rule I follow. I worked at an A&W right after high school and a lot of people would sign off on cleaning the machine without actually doing it. So by the time somebody did clean it the mix in the bottom was mostly curdled. It was disgusting and stuck with me.

Even though this grosses me out... I'll probably still eat lots of soft serve. It's SO GOOD.
Strangely enough my first cravings were a turkey hero from my favorite deli and a chocolate milkshake.  I held off on the hero for a while but eventually gave in.....but the stinking ice cream man parks outside my house EVERY night.......it was too difficult to resist so as soon as I actually had some cash on me I went for it.  I never carry cash anymore.

  • Don't worry about it, deli meat has just as much risk for listeria as anything else we eat for having other crap in it. The risk is so unbelievably small, you have about the same chances of winning the lottery. As long as it was from a trustworthy place I wouldn't worry. I eat sushi and deli meat and did with my last pregnancy too and never had an issue one. It's not so much about the meat as it is the condition in which it's stored and prepared so if you know it was clean and stored in a cold place you don't need to worry.
  • This fricking ice cream man!!!!!!!! He's outside taunting me!!!!!!!

  • I had Culver's tonight.  Hopefully they clean their machines, haha.  The only rules I follow are no alcohol, avoid secondhand smoke, nothing raw, and nothing sketchy (ie, gas station lunchmeat sandwiches).  Most of the cheese stuff I don't worry about, because so few cheeses are made with unpasteurized milk.  The only thing I avoid is anything called "housemade cheese" like they have at some gastropubs, because I'm not sure about those.

I'm always surprised by what people are told not to eat.  My Dr just said to limit caffein (never drank or smoked so she didn't mention those things).  I can eat what ever I want.
