What's new in your yards and gardens?

This weekend I planted a few different varieties of tomatoes, peppers (bell and jalapeno), eggplant, cauliflower, strawberries. Also added a few border flowers that were left over from mother's day gifts I put together. The dandelions and weeds are crazy this year. I just keep reminding myself that the back breaking work is burning calories. Also started a new lawn waste compost pile. I'm mostly doing this to build up a corner bed that was flattened by Sandy. We are on a corner lot and the drain grate always floods out, I want a higher barrier there so I am letting the organic waste break down so next year I can plant in it again. All this yard work is making me realize how out of shape I am, ouch! my aching back! Time to get back on the weight loss train.

I am eating the lettuce and spinach out of my garden. The potatoes are starting to bloom. The rest (carrots, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, and zucchini) are slowly growing but no veggies for a while. The week before last I tackled pulling weeds and mulching all the mulch beds. We hadn't done mulch since three years ago so it desperately needed it. I have a few types of flowers blooming but several more are still behind this year.

Garden isn't happening this year, but DH finally planted the shrubs I wanted in the front bed that he ripped out last year (it's been a bare dirt patch for almost a year, so this is a huge improvement). Now we need to deal with the bare dirt patch where he ripped out a planting bed in the backyard.....

  • So I may not be veggy gardening yet but I've been busy with other peoples flower gardens!! Last week my son and I did 50 bags of mulch, yesterday I raked pruned and weeded at my regular clients house, today I helped a friend edge and mulch, hand prep an area and spread grass seed and weed. Tomorrow is pruning or edging for someone, Thursday back at my normal place, Friday edging and mulching all day at another big clients house!!

3 pots of tomatoes were ready after our two week vacation. Dh made sauce and we still have a pot of tomatoes left. I really enjoyed this since he blended it instead of leaving what I call twigs (Rosemary stems and tomato skins) floating in the sauce. My dragon fruit has also started to grow. Unfortunately I think the heat wave killed our lime tree, the whole top is brown and crispy, luckily the in laws also have a lime and lemon tree so I won't go without citrus!

@nlynch11 , I wouldn't feel too bad, we never really ate the limes, they started becoming a hassle because I hate wasting food so I was constantly trying to find someone to take them!  Also when you have fruit growing in your yard you never want to buy that fruit since you know you will get more than you can eat of it, during a 2 week period...so before our peach tree died I'd always want peaches but mine weren't ready, and then I'd get hundreds of peaches and be sick of them, lol!
