Hives type rash making me crazy!

Just curious if anyone else has experienced a hives-like rash during pregnancy. It started 2 days after I found out I was pregnant on my legs and has now moved to my arms, and itches like crazy! Called the doc, and they recommended benadryl and hydrocortisone for the itching. If it is not better in a week, they want me to come back. No changes in environment or detergent or soap. Only change is that I am pregnant! I looked online and thought it could be PUPPP, but it seems that only happens later in pregnancy. thanks, and happy wednesday!

  • I have hives on my butt but I think its from the progesterone shots. Sorry, I'm no help.

I haven't had personal experience, but a friend had PUPPs while pregnant.  It showed up about week 14, and her OB originally took forever diagnosing it because it's a "later in pregnancy" symptom.

However, it IS possible to develop sensitivities or full blown allergies while pregnant, as your body is weird compared to prepregnancy.  So theoretically it could be a lotion or a food, but mostly you'd probably want to contact someone in the medical field for more help if it's more than a mild annoyance.

  • Yes! Hives Started on my upper thighs then moved all over my body..I took Benadryl as my doctor recommended and it went away in 24 hours. It was during my first trimester, I was 6 weeks along or so..I blames it on ricotta cheese...good luck!

  • I had this happen with DD. Apparently you can develop sudden allergies while pregnant. I basically had to stop using every product I was at the time (lotion, shampoo, soap, etc) as well as eliminate common allergy-causing foods from my diet and slowly reintroduce to figure out what was causing the problem. It was a long process and turned out to be everything product-wise (thankfully no foods) since my skin was soooo sensitive at the time. Benadryl helped a lot.

  • Thanks all. I stopped taking the pre- natal and switched to folic acid only, in case that is it. I will try the products first and see if it helps. Any recs on good soap/body wash to try?
