Can anyone explain what the cervix thinning procedure is the day before an induction?

40 weeks today and at my appt the dr said I am scheduled to go into the hospital at night on May 27th for a treatment to thin my cervix. Is this cervidil or something else? She said if that doesn't work I will be induced the morning of the 28th(one week from today). Of course, this is if I don't go into labor on my own before. Fingers crossed that I go on my own, but can anyone give some details just in case?

It's usually either Cervidil or Cytotec. But if they're admitting you and inducing the next morning, my money's on Cytotec. It's stronger and generally more likely to produce quick results as long as the body is ready, the baby's in a good position, and the cervix is cooperative.

I had cytotec with DS, it was a pill they gave me. That dilated me to 3cm and 100% effacement and then they started pitocin and broke my water.

@deanna1313‌ I had an uncooperative cervix, so we did 3 doses of Cervidil over a week's time, then 2 doses of Cytotec the night before my Pitocin induction. DS's head was too large to fit through my pelvis, though, so none of it worked and I required a c-section. I've known several women who had successful Cytotec inductions, though. It's quite common.

I had cytotec the night before. They only gave me 2 doses and aim not sure it did much. Of course they didn't check until the next morning when they started the pitocin. My friend had something different that was an insert. She said they made her nervous that it would fall out while going to the bathroom and it was really expensive.

Yes they both can be put "up there". Although cytotec can be oral too.

  • Not sure why I haven't been asking more questions when I'm in there. So not like me! Thanks
Baby is in good position, low and I've been dilated 1cm for 4 weeks. Did you have it done? @jenb_99‌
  • My friend had something done the night before her scheduled induction and she said that she ended up not having to be induced at all. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that or going into labor before any of it.
  • Are cervidil and cytotec pills or something inserted that's put on your cervix. I swore the dr said they will put something up there.
  • So I finally heard back from the dr. They called to give me an appt time for the hospital for induction. It is cytotec they are going to give me first and then the next morning it would be pitocin. Instead of going in on the 27th they are waiting until the 29th. Maybe I'll have a chance to go into labor on my own.
    Thanks for everyone's help!
