Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

opinions on potty training please

My son is only 16.5 months but he will tell you pee pee and run to the bathroom. The problem is he will not sit on potty and ends up peeing all over the floor. He obviously knows he has to go but because he will not sit does that mean he's not ready? Or does anyone have any good advice on potties for boys?

Re: opinions on potty training please

  • He probably wants to see what is going on down there. Try having him sit backwards on the toilet so that he is straddling the seat. He will be able to see what is going on and feel more stable.

  • I have read that potty training too early can cause ongoing bladder problems. I'll post the link if I can find it.
  • I don't think he's too young if he is able to tell you. DS started showing interest at 16 months but I thought it was too early so I brushed it off. At 19 months he started holding it and not going in his diaper then going as soon as he had it off. So we potty trained because i was worried he was holding it so long he might get a bladder infection. At 22 months he went 3 days without a pee accident and it had been 3 weeks since a poop accident. He turns 2 June 1st and is completely day and nap trained. He wears a pull up to bed but the last 2 days woke up dry.
  • I don't think 16.5 is too young for kids who are interested.  I'm reading "The Everything Potty Training Book" and finding it informative and helpful.

maybe try practicing sitting on the potty at other times until he gets the idea?  Having him look at a book or toy or puppet might help him sit there for a while.  Then once he gets better at the sitting part, start connecting it with the peeing.

    good luck
