Do you think this was fair?

I just saw this on my FB feed. There is also a letter from the organization, but I felt that gave to much personal information. It was nicely written. Basically said that they were a non-religious based organization. So they could not allow a gift to be sent with a religious attachment. I feel for both sides. Just curious what O13's take is in this?

  • I'm sure the organization would have told her that they couldn't take certain items when she showed interest in participating.

I would hope so, but it didn't sound like she knew.

In the letter they offered a link
That gives the gift parameters. It all makes sense to me, but she is so upset she doesn't want to be a part of the group. I'm just wondering if she was made aware of the rules before hand. I agree if she is giving a gift to a child that is in a different country, the "Jesus Loves Me" could cause a lot of problems.

  • If the organization sends to children all over the world, it is understandable that they would not want to accept something with Jesus on it.  I read an article yesterday about a woman in Sudan who is going to be hung because she married a Christian.  She is 8 months pregnant and will be hung after she gives birth.  We are a free country, that doesn't mean all the other countries are.

  • I think it shouldn't have been sent unless it was to a church organization.

That's horrible, but yes that is exactly why these rules are in place.

  • If she knew the gift parameters, then she shouldn't have sent a gift that so obviously violated them. It's weird it was an Easter gift, though. Was the organization soliciting gifts to be sent at Easter or is that something the sponsor family decided to do?

That's what I'm wondering as well. I took it as she was sending an Easter gift. Perhaps she just chose to do that. These bunnies were only in the store around Easter time. I'm so tempted to ask for more information, but everyone that has responded on there is on the side of the gift giver. I don't think my questions would be looked at kindly...lol

We sponsor a child through ChildFund so I'm not surprised they sent it back. I just looked up Save the Children's policy on gift giving and it seems to be the similar. Here is a screen shot. Letters and cards are also not usually passed on unless they fit certain parameters.

I would be very surprised if they did not provide the gift giving guidelines before-hand. I would also be very surprised if she bothered to read them. How often do you (general you, not specific to anyone) actually read through the entire terms of service before clicking that you accept or read all of the rights and responsibilities documents that your bank/credit cards send like every other week? I think it's pretty common to not read what is provided and want to complain you weren't told when it comes back to bite you in the ass.

I'm glad you guys are all siding with the organization. I was really surprised when everyone was mad at the organization.... I had to come here and make sure I wasn't crazy!

Okay Jalee come clean.  Are you the woman who sent the gift to the organization in an effort to get rid of it?

Haha that would have been funny...lol but Alas it's not the same bunny. It was deft a gift though. I'm not sure I could of gotten over the creepy singing.

  • This is the gift giving policy for Save The Children.  It states gifts must be shared.  If I am going to donate to a charity, I do my research, as should anyone giving money/gifts to a foundation.  It was easy enough to find, and it seems like she would of with a little bit of due diligence.

Sending Gift to Your Sponsored Child – Policy
Sponsors are asked to follow the following guidelines: Gift packages should be kept small. It is acceptable to send inexpensive gifts that fit flat in an envelope no larger than 8” x 11” and can be shared with other children Sponsors should consider small, inexpensive items such as:

Postcards or stationery Stickers Coloring books Small picture books Photos Maps or posters Hair ribbons, barrettes or combs Children appreciate these types of items, they are not usually subject to customs duties (for international sponsorships), they arrive regularly, and most importantly, they can be shared with the child's family and friends.

  • I'm really surprised that people are so upset at the organization... It seems like this was her mistake for not looking at the guidelines. It doesn't seem like this gift was appropriate, regardless of the religious aspect. But even as a religious person, I totally respect the organization's decision on this.

If she wants a religious aspect involved then she should give through a religious organization. That being said, I wouldn't advocate for her to stop sponsoring this child, because that's punishing the child for something that isn't their fault.
