Nanny question : Driving - her car or yours?

Our son is getting to an age where he needs more interaction outside of our home. We would like our nanny to take him to reading at the library and My Gym sessions etc. those of you who have nannies who transport your children do they use your car or theirs? She told us that he past employers let her use their cars. I find that hard to believe and have never heard of this. Thanks for your thoughts! Amanda

Re: Nanny question : Driving - her car or yours?

  • My friends have a third car solely for the nanny's use while she's transporting their children. They wanted to be sure the car their kids ride in was in good repair with carseats whose installation had been inspected. Obviously this is an expensive option, but it sounded like it's standard where they live.

  • I've been a nanny for same family for 20 years...well house assistant now lol and in the beginning used my car. They gave me a gas card but my car was always a mess from the kids. I put so many miles a day on it it was ridiculous. Still do.

They then gave me a car few years ago which I loved but then got rid of it and now I'm back using my car. I only get mileage but wished I can beat up their car and not mine..haha.

If she is only driving few miles she shouldn't have a problem with it. Just make sure to give her gas $ :) Will she be ok using her car?

I was only a nanny for one summer, and I used my own car to drive my charge around.

However, if I were to have a nanny drive my child around, I actually think I would want them to use my car.  That way I could ensure it was safe, full of gas, car seat installed properly, etc.

  • I don't have a nanny, but my friend was a nanny for years and they bought a car for her to use to drive the kids around.  I think it might have been because her car wasn't very kid friendly (it was an old beater sports car).

  • Thanks all for the thoughts! We figured we would give her gas money or mileage reimbursement. She won't be going further than say 10 miles each time she drives our son at least at first. To be honest, I think she takes better care of her things than she would of ours which is why I think I prefer her to use her car. She cares well for our son but has broken a few things in the house etc. glasses, recliner. They are obviously lesser in importance compared to the wellbeing of our child :) Thanks for the advice!
