Maternity Photos

I don't know if this is the right board to ask this question, but here it goes!

When is the best time to take these photos?? I am hearing mixed opinions IRL. Some are saying do them around the 8th month, and some are saying wait until the very end.

I want the photos to be beautiful (I know this is vain), and I don't want to feel massive. I'm leaning towards doing the early...

What have some of you done in past pregnancies, and how did it turn out?

Re: Maternity Photos

  • From what I've seen most do it around the 7th month. Sometimes 8th month. The reason is because you are showing by then and you won't be too uncomfortable. Most models are photographed for maternity stuff in their 7th month.

I haven't had mine done yet... so I can't help you out there. I plan to have mine done myself when I'm around 7 months.

  • I agree... 7/8th month makes sense to me too. When I was advised to take them at the very end I just kept picturing this awful uncomfortable face in every photo. haha.

    Thanks for your help!
  • The friend who is doing mine (is a photographer) and she reccommends 7 1/2 months because that's the perfect pregnancy cute window. big enough to definitely look pregnant, but not so big as to be miserable and uncomfortable (and have it show in those photos)...esp. since mine will be outside in July! but she does reccommend doing the cast as close to the end if you're going to do it to record how big you are and taking one last belly shot before heading to the hospital (how I will remember that, I don't know!)

I did mine at 33 weeks with DS and they turned out great. You don't want to wait too long then have the baby come early. I could have waited a couple more weeks, but I didn't want to push it. Our 1st wedding anniversary was 5 days after DS was born so I wanted to make sure I had them printed & framed before our anniversary so I could give them to DH as a gift.

I recommend my clients do them 30/36 weeks and I think 33-36 is most common

And depending on what you are wanting you may have to be negotiable with time. 9-11a or 6-8p if it's light out is best outside usually unless you are shooting studio or open shade like between two buildings... Direct sunlight at say a park won't happen easily :)
  • I got mine done a month before my due date.
  • I did mine at 32 weeks with DS1. I wish I would have waited another month because my bump wasn't very big. I'm 36 weeks now and will probably do mine within the next couple weeks of i decide to do them at all.
  • I did mine at 29 weeks with my son. I wanted to avoid looking super puffy or bloated, but it turned out I would've still looked ok much later. However, I was (and still am) very happy with them. I was definitely pregnant "enough" to make them cute. I'll probably wait longer this time around.

This is why you don't want to wait too long. If you want to long you won't feel like messing with them.

As a maternity photographer I photograph all of my maternity portraits at 36-37 weeks unless the mom is pregnant with twins.

This to me is the best timing because your belly is to the point where it is fully round but you aren't too uncomfortable.

ETA: Your maternity photographer will have a preference of when he/she would like to see them done. You should choose your photographer and ask for their advice.
