Poop in EBF newborns

How long is normal for a newborn to go without pooping? My six week old twins have gone over 24 hours even though they usually go a few times a day and I'm starting to get worried. Don't want to call the pediatrician though if it's normal development. Another question, are there foods I could be eating that cause constipation in babies? Thanks!

Re: Poop in EBF newborns

  • Our ped said its common for EBF babies to not poop as often because they are able to use almost everything in BM. When DD was younger she would routinely go 7-10 days between poops. She wasn't constipated, just didn't need to go. I wouldn't worry about it at this point.

  • I wouldn't worry, my DS can go 3-4 days without pooping in fact that's normal for him.

  • How are the babies acting? If they seem fine, I wouldn't worry about it at this point.

  • Thanks all that's what I figured but needed reassurance. DS was a little fussy yesterday but not bad so I won't worry just keep an eye on it.
  • My ped says up to a week, sometimes even 10 days is normal. Not to say LO wouldn't be uncomfortable by then. My DD sometimes goes 5 days without and she's gassy and fussy by then.

I hated the drastic change. At almost exactly 1 month old she went from 8-10 poops per day to 1 a day for a week then dropped to every other day. Scared the crap out of me. (Pun intended.)

At about 6 weeks LO did the same, went from like 5-6 poops a day to 1 every 2-3 days. Longest we have gone so far is 5 days, then she did 3 that day.
