Extended breastfeeding questions, allergy to wcm

Hello. I need your help mommas. As we near the 1 year mark, I'm looking forward to the end of pumping...I've been dreaming of this day for months. I had a job change at 8 months and finding space and time to pump has been very challenging.

The problem is, we suspect LO has a milk allergy. She is breaking out in a rash around her mouth with milk and butter. We haven't seen a reaction to cheese or yogurt, though I'm now afraid to give it to her. We haven't seen an allergist yet.

I'd always planned to nurse until at least 2, in the morning, evening and before bed and on demand on weekends, as long as my supply lasted. But now I don't feel so relaxed about it. I feel like my milk is still going to be a critical part of her nutrition. I'm worried that my supply won't last for those sessions if I drop pumping.

Is 3 nursing sessions a day nutritionally adequate? As far as fat, protein, calcium, etc? She does eat a wide variety of solids.

Per the pedi, we have tried a little soy milk this weekend, which she so far seems ok with. Our daycare does provide soy milk for soy tolerant/milk allergic kids if we so choose.

Can anyone share their experience with this in any form or? @theresat858‌ , or anyone? Are you still out there @AmyG?

Thanks.

  • Thanks for the link! Soy is controversial, but the pedi and a dietician family member have both assured me the allegations are false. I thought about almond or coconut, the problem is, they have much less fat and protein compared to soy.

  • I think you're great @casey78‌, but I can think of better clubs we could join.

  • @casey78‌ , what kind of allergy testing did they do? The allergist told us that they'd do the scratch test, and that LO would have to be still for 10 minutes, yeah right. Plus, it's 1100 bucks out if pocket, thank you high deductible health plan. So, I cancelled our appointment.

  • Thanks gals. Casey, I'm not sure which price they gave. I'd pay it, for peace of mind, but then I've heard good allergy testing isn't always 100% accurate, so then I'll be wondering if it didn't discover something she is allergic to .

DD#2 had allergy testing 2 months ago (12 months old)  I held her on my lap with her shirt off, they applied the skin test and we played for 15 minutes.  They told me to not let her touch her back.

She was tested for milk and all though I totally though it was going to be a positive ( looked big and red to me) they measured it and said she was not.  That being said she still has reactions to dairy so we are dairy free.

I wanted to wean at 12 months but I don't feel that my DD#2 eats enough to meet all her nutritional needs yet.  I am still BF but I do offer a sippy of coconut milk or almond milk with her meals just to get her use to it. She only drinks a few sips per day.

She has had reactions to eggs, peanut also since our last allergist appointment.

I think my plan is to still BF for now until I feel her needs can be met with solid foods alone.

  • I'm a luker and I can't answer your question about supply but I am allergic to milk. I have been my entire life. I don't think you have to worry about protein, fat or calcium if she has a good diet. I use almond milk on my cereal but otherwise don't have any dairy or substitute. Google a list of calcium rich foods but as far as protein, meats and nuts are better sources than milk. Also some types of dairy I tolerate better than others. For example I can have butter on my noodles but a chese stick would put me over the edge.
As far as the testing is concerned- maybe the blood test is cheaper?

I was told since I was little that most people outgrow their allergies so there is hope!

  • We saw reactions to cow's milk and cheese when DD was nearing a year.  First off, I was told that nursing 3 times a day was fine so I continued that for a few months.  In the meantime, we had a blood test to check or allergies to milk as well as soy, almonds, coconut and the other common allergens so we would know what alternatives we could offer.  This was ordered by her ped so we never had to see an allergist.  DD tested to have a very minor allergy to "boiled milk" which was really annoying bc her reaction is specifically to uncooked milk and cheese not cooked and that was all they tested for.  Anyway, I started offering soymilk since I found it to be highest in protein, fat, and calcium compared to the others.  I did wean fully at 16 months and continued to give soymilk along with yogurt, and cooked cheeses.  At 2 we recently switched to almond milk which she doesn't like as much as soy.
