NBR:degree

Has anyone pursued a degree online? How did you go about it? What university did you use? What was your degree in? Have you had any issues getting a job with the degree?
I have about 66 credit hours from the local state university. I had to stop taking classes when I got pregnant. At this point I really don t have time to take classes on campus. I need something that is completely online.
I'm looking at the university of Phoenix online. Any experience?

Sorry if I post and run this morning. It's going to be a busy day and I don't know how often I'll be able to check back.

I would recommend that you look at an online 'school' that is regionally accredited.  In the event that you decided to transfer from the online school back to a brick and mortar institution, you have a better chance of your online credits actually transferring.

I got my Masters in Secondary Education online.  I just was trying to find education programs and did some googling as well as some research on the schools I was looking into.  I went to Saint Joseph's University, which is actually a physical school.  A lot of physical institutions are going to an online format as well as on campus.  My mom got her Bachelors in Business online from a physical school.

I will admit that I have had issues finding a job, but not because my degree was done online.  You can't even tell it was because the school is not known for that.  I have been having issues because it's education and that can be a tricky field to get into...apparently.  It's not as taboo as it used to be to have an online degree because distance learning and continuing education have become more of a norm.

I agree with checking with your school. Many universities offer their own online programs now.
  • @34blondie I currently have a job in the industry I want to be in but it is a entry level and I can not move up without a degree.

@nikel13 I looked at going back to my university but they only offer some online classes. You can not finish your degree without going to campus to class. I would love to have my degree from them but it's just not possible right now because I have to be able to hold a full time job and take care of E.

I'm also looking at Univeristy of Mass. online. They have the program I want and are a real brick and mortor school but their online Hospitality Program is one of the top 5 on several of my google searches for the top online degree programs in this field.

St. Joe's is right by me :) It's a very good school.

  • I'm still waiting on if I get accepted, but I'm trying to get into an online graduate program at University of Florida, for Pharmaceutical Chemistry. It's a legit school, and I'm not sure about transferring credits, but I don't plan on doing that. Idk what it is, but University of Phoenix just doesn't sit right with me. I had a friend who went there, and had issues trying to transfer his classes (he was trying to transfer to his community college). He had about 60 credits, and wasn't able to transfer any of them. It set him back big time.

I found this site, and it lists all the colleges that do it. Only 12 states will accept credits from UoP.

  • I finally found my original schools credit transfer page inline this afternoon. They have a page where you can input any school in the US and it will tell you have the credits transfer. For my field of study basically nothing transfer as actual credit. Everything transfers as "elective in..." I check several online and b&m schools. Even the other two main university's in the state only transfer about half the credits to my school. :/

  • I got my bachelors thru Liberty University online. It is a private university in Virginia but they offer full degree and masters programs online. I did the first 2 years at our local college and then got pregnant with my first and the cost of daycare while I was at class wasn't worth it so I decided to turn to online. I have a bachelor of science in business administration and I haven't tried to get a job with my degree (been a SAHM since graduating) but it does not say anywhere on my transcripts or diploma that it was online. It shows that I graduated from Liberty University
I loved that the classes are 9 weeks so I could take 2-3 courses at a time and still be taking 12+ credits a semester. I looked into Phoenix but it was more expensive and I had not heard the best things about how potential employers view degrees from there

@BbyCarter13‌ I work at a university and we have a site like that. However, it only shows courses that students have transferred in and have, thus, been evaluated. It doesn't show every single course that the institution offers. So maybe that's the case for you.

Also, if you are concerned about how credits may transfer, I would recommend talking to someone at the school. Sometimes those transfer credit databases have courses listed that haven't been evaluated in years and may need to be looked at again.
