We are taking half day tomorrow and Friday off and heading up to Massachusetts to hangout with my In-Laws! We will probably hit the children museum in Boston and various other fun activities. I love going there because my MIL does everything for me, however we are driving and I am REALLY not looking forward to at least 9 hours in the car! Anyone else have fun plans for the long weekend?
Re: Memorial Weekend Plans?
We are having a BBQ for my mom's birthday on Sunday but that's about it. Probably some yard work. We used to go camping every memorial weekend but DD isn't quite ready yet. I miss it.
As far as fun plans, I'd like to grill some chicken and fill the kiddy pool so that DS can enjoy himself, but I'm kinda nervous since he just had tubes in last week, even though his Doctor said that he'll be fine as long as we aren't swimming in a lake or sticking a Waterhouse directly in DS's ears.
You obviously made it to
home, congrats! Your baby
is the size of a baseball.

My chart here All ALers welcome!
My birthday is on Tuesday so we're going out to dinner with friends to celebrate on Saturday night. On Monday we will probably go to the zoo. Depending on the weather, we might break out the water table for DD.
For our family, we celebrate our military every day...and not just on one weekend a year. So it's not about what the 'holiday' stands for, it's about what the country stands for and it's not one 'holiday,'it's every day. My DS and any other children we may be blessed with will be well acquainted with the service and sacrifice of our fellow countrymen and women.
Tl;dr: We'll be grilling and swimming and thanking God for our service members like we would on any other decently pleasant day of the year.
Even though it's a day to celebrate the sacrifice women and men have made for our country, There are parades in their honor, parties, sales and cookouts. I can see what you mean but I also think it's pretty firmly established as a holiday.
Maybe it would be better to think of it as a Feast Day in their honor? Like some Viking Feast Day to celebrate the fallen
Not all families remember the military every day as a normal thing, so I think it's nice to have a day like Memorial Day to officially honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is definitely moving to see all the veterans gathering together to remember. Marching in numerous Memorial Day parades during my 14 years of service, Taps would always brings tears to my eyes, and I'm positive it still would. I don't bash those who don't recognize the reason for the holiday, I mean, hecks yeah it's the unofficial beginning of summer, and kind of like the official beginning of grilling season - but let me tell you, the boiled hot dogs they served us at the VFW every year were always my favorite dogs of the summer (not to mention the hot apple pie and ice cream).
