**MFI Check In **

edited May 2014 in Trouble TTC

Welcome! It's time to check-in for those of use dealing with MFI on our TTC journey. Fill us in on any updates & ask any questions!

We welcome everyone but mostly we are dealing with low count, motility, morphology or all three. Male infertility is a mysterious world filled with questions no one, including REs, urologists, acupuncturists or anyone else seem to have the answers to.Anytreatment suggested is a coin toss for success and a 3 month wait for a fresh batch of swimmers. Most of us are told the only answer is IUI or IVF w/ICSI.The purpose of this group is to support each other through shared experiences and to share any info we can because the more informed we are the better. We will have a check in every other Thursday (I'm early this week). Welcome and baby dust to all!

Anyone new, please intro w/name (if you want), MFI issues and where you are in your curent cycle! Thanks!

HUGS TO ALL THAT NEED THEM <3 FX TO ALL IN 2WW!! <3

Any questions for the ladies in our group.. don't hesitate!!

Re: **MFI Check In **

  • I had our third IUI yesterday morning. I had 3 mature follicles this time w/ a close 4th. However, DH's counts were worse than ever. 4.2 mil. motile post wash, although the motility did go up from 50% to 70%. I was crying on the table when I heard the news. He started Fertile Blend and Coq10 almost 3 months ago.. so I guess they helped the motility. A part of me thinks his lower counts was bc we BD'd twice on Sunday before the IUI on Tuesday. Bad move. Another part of me thinks its just getting worse. He had 9 mil. for IUI #1, 6 mil for IUI #2 and now this. I'm sad, but I'm trying to balance that w/ not making my DH feel terrible. The RE pushed IVF again if this doesn't work. I want to be hopeful, but I'm having a harder time as the days pass.

    Good luck to everyone!!

QOTW: I recently saw The Help (bc I just finished the book).. it was great! Also, Frozen Ground was really good too.

  • Last week, the RE officially DXed us with mild MFI due to 12 million/mL count and 2% morph (although motility was up). He thinks post-wash total motile will be enough so we are staring IUI#1 after AF starts (I'll take Letrozole). DH had bloodwork done, and is going to see a uro.

DH took his SA results kind of hard. Our phone report from the nurse didn't tell us the 12mil concentration, only the 38mil total motile, so he was sure he had greatly improved. He spent the day making little self-deprecating jokes about his soldiers but told me at the end of the day that he was making jokes to try and ignore how crummy it made him feel. :( I got him in the mood for a little TLC and it seemed to help! :)

With our RE's advice, it looks like we'll keep doing IUI for the summer break (I'm a teacher) and then hold off on IVF until winter break (if needed). Not sure yet if we'd take a break from Sept-Nov or if we'd pay for more IUI during that time. Always trying to keep the long-term ramifications and cost/benefit balance in mind!

QOTW: A couple weeks ago, DH wanted to do something sweet because I was feeling stressed, so he recommended we watch Saving Mrs. Banks (not his usual type of movie). It was really uplifting (with tough moments) but the characters were complex at the same time, so not cheesy!

DH's counts were much better for our 3rd IUI. (Post wash count went from 2.2 million to 27 million!) I'm 7dpiui and have been super busy so haven't been tempted to POAS, but thinking about it might change that! @MissEm15‌ I know MFI is such a crapshoot, but I will have some hope for you! The last 3 SAs my DH had, up until the IUI we just did, kept going down, down, down. We were both really upset about it. I pretty much wrote off the things DH had tried and was afraid he was just "running out" of sperm, which wasn't realistic to think. Things were so much better this time, I think because we hadn't given it enough time. They all say "3 months" but we were JUST at that mark, and I think I got discouraged too soon. Also, this time we waited 4, almost 5 days from BD to IUI. I was afraid that would hurt us because DHs motility is so low, but it didn't I guess. Our RE was pushing IVF, too, and we know there's a good chance we'll still need it. Obviously our cases are different, and again this is all a crapshoot, but if this IUI doesn't work for you (praying it does!) and if you do any more IUIs, I'll have everything crossed for you that YH's numbers go up like mine did. Or, if you go the IVF route, we'll be rooting for you in that, too! Thanks also for doing the check-in.

Nothing too much to report here. We are moving to IVF with ICSI and I started BCP yesterday. My RE called today to say that she wants my DH to go in for a frozen sperm for backup if needed. Because we have 0% motility she wants us to withhold one day instead 3-5 so hopefully that will help :)

QOTD: I'm lame and haven't watched to many good movies lately. We finally saw the Heat and that was pretty good!

I am at 10dpo of this cycle (TI, due to cancelled IUI#4), and this 2WW is driving me crazy!  I've had a slight cramping feeling and a general "sensitivity" or "awareness" of my ovaries.  I can't help trying to figure out if this feels any different than previous cycles, and if it means anything positive or negative.
The fact that it was TI this cycle is also messing with my head, because I have no idea what DH's numbers were like.

Still going beta or bust, but I can't wait for next Tuesday (5/27) to arrive!!

QOTW: I can't think of any good movies that I've seen lately, but I've noted a few mentioned here, to check them out.

DH got his second SA results back over the phone and the lady telling him his results didn't have the time of day for him. She said your count after wash is 1 Mil and it's all pretty much the same as last time. This was not helpful AT ALL.

I have my CT scan Friday to see if anything else is going on besides IBS. If there is that needs to be dealt with first. After that I'll make the necessary appointments for figuring where we go next fertility wise.

QOTW: Godzilla was pretty good. If buy it on DVD. Also finally got around to watching About Time. Think that's the name of the movie. It was a nice chick flick.

  • I am just waiting for cycle day 1 ( should be tomorrow). This cycle will be a natural cycle due to vacation and then iui #1 at the end of June. I get kind of discouraged though since I was thrilled with a count of 12 million for our last SA, and I am hoping for a post wash count of 4-5 million ( for our iui ) and I hear other people on here who are devastated by results like that.

It's like is iui a waste of time for us? My RE really gave me hope....

but may want to before moving forward with any fertility treatments.
After seeing the uro, DH is currently taking lots of supplements and clomid to try to boost his count. We will have a repeat SA in February to see if it works.
    Follow up SA numbers are: Count= 4 million, Motility= 40%, Morphology= 1%
Uro wants us to have another follow up SA 5/9 to see if we see further improvement than we are back to the RE to make a game plan.

@TLooney17 I was only sad because he previously had 9mil and 6mil. So his sample just keeps getting worse. To hear that my RE wants 5 mil min. and we weren't there, when I responded so well, was just hard. I just wanted to have a great chance! However, I prev. got pregnant (loss) w/ the 6 mil motile so I've since calmed down and realized our number wasn't so bad if you add my extra follicle. Don't take my knee jerk reaction to heart. Plus it makes me really happy to hear your RE is hopeful w/ that number, mine wasn't giving off that vibe.

  • *****Warning Previous Child Mentioned****

I guess that is what is so hard. There seems to be a huge discrepancy in regards to numbers & opinions. I hear one person say they are diagnosed as severe MFI and one person with similar numbers diagnosed with mild. I am never quite sure either if someone is talking about a total count or a count per ml.

My RE would like to see around 5 million total post wash  ( ideally )for an iui, but I hear other people get those results and think it's horrible. There are so many differing opinions when it comes to MFI.

@MissEm15 I understand your reaction completely. No one wants their counts to go down.

@BlueJoan is that a total count of 16 million or per ml. ?  If it's per ml I find that hard to believe, especially since I got pregnant on my own  ( after a little over a year of trying) with my son when my husbands count was 16 million per ml and our motility was only at 40% with 2% morph.

  • @BlueJoan No problem! I just always wonder, because some people talk about total count while others are talking per ml. We have never had a wash, so I have no idea what we will end up with then.....

    It's all just hard :(.

After crappy news a few weeks ago we're still waiting on the karotype. I keep waiting for that other shoe to drop and knowing if it does I'll be a wreck since we've decided that statistically it doesn't make sense to keep going forward if his karotype comes back abnormal. Our RE said that it was a 1in6 chance for a normal embryo and with mini/natural ivf we're only looking at 1 maybe 2 embryos tops...so yeah...not good.
As far as movies go we just went and saw the new Xmen movie, which I thoroughly enjoyed even though the writers totally f-ed up any type of continuity through the series. We're psyched to go see Malificent next!

    TTC since March of 2012
    Me: 27 Dh: 35 Testing Begins 3/5/13
Six SA's show DH has low numbers across the board = severe MFI
Genetic testing for me = MTHFR+, also carrier for blood clotting disorder Otherwise all else normal
    Dh's karotype= Normal!!
     Mini-IVF/ICSI - July -August 2014 - 1R,M,&F Transferred 1 Grade 1 Morula-5dt - BFFN
