Memorial Weekend Plans?

We are taking half day tomorrow and Friday off and heading up to Massachusetts to hangout with my In-Laws! We will probably hit the children museum in Boston and various other fun activities. I love going there because my MIL does everything for me, however we are driving and I am REALLY not looking forward to at least 9 hours in the car! Anyone else have fun plans for the long weekend?

Re: Memorial Weekend Plans?

  • Ew 9 hours in the car sounds like torture!

We are driving to my husbands friends house for a BBQ. These friends seem to only invite us around when it is convenient for them so I am not really looking forward to it. I am still debating running a race Monday morning. Can't decide.

  • H took Friday off so he can work on staining our deck. We usually go away for this weekend, but I really want DD in her "big girl room" in the summer, so I am hanging back and cleaning the basement so we can clean out her new room and paint it.
  • @GrahamSchneider‌ that's funny because my DH is planning on taking Friday off to stain our deck too ;).

We are having a BBQ for my mom's birthday on Sunday but that's about it. Probably some yard work. We used to go camping every memorial weekend but DD isn't quite ready yet. I miss it.

  • We're having DHs family down for a cook out on Saturday. Then on Monday I'll be delivering a fried chicken lunch to a downtown church to feed the homeless. Aside from that, just relaxing!

Probably just BBQ and I may go watch the parade on Monday, only because from '1999-2013 I have not enjoyed a Memorial Day parade because I was IN them with my Army Unit. Last year I totally slept in and it was WONDERFUL.

  • I think we're going to (finally!) put the garden in. I'd like to go through stuff in storage to donate, too.

As far as fun plans, I'd like to grill some chicken and fill the kiddy pool so that DS can enjoy himself, but I'm kinda nervous since he just had tubes in last week, even though his Doctor said that he'll be fine as long as we aren't swimming in a lake or sticking a Waterhouse directly in DS's ears.

@muskiefan07 are you going to Taste? :-) We'll probably stop by at some point.
  • Going down to visit my sil. I swear every time I get pregnant I end up visiting them (several states away) within a week by total coincidence. I think they may realize, but they won't ask unless we offer information (they get it :) )

  • not much.  hanging out in the yard, maybe taking advantage of our zoo membership.  SO might try to take DS fishing for bluegill at one of the little parks here.  it'd be DS's first time fishing, but at this lake supposedly if the conditions are right, you can catch them about as fast as you can throw the hook out, so we're hoping it'll be fun for DS during this time when his attention span is super short, lol.  there's lots to do around here when the weather's nice if you just want to be outdoors, and it's supposed to be in the low 80s all weekend with a chance for t-storms on sunday, so it should be good for being outside and active.

We belong to a sportsmen's club and Memorial Day weekend is opening weekend for the beach. It will probably be too cold for me to go swimming, but my kids are at that glorious age where they could swim a tub of ice water and not think it was cold. Opening weekend always brings out tons of people, so I'll at least get to see a lot of old friends while I freeze with the kids.
LOL. this is my daughter. Which reminds me, I may have to get a new pool this weekend just because of this fact. As soon as it's warm enough to go outside with no jacket, she needs the pool out.

There seems to be a lot of painting going on!!  We need to paint our new baseboards and trim...so that will probably happen:)  My mom has been visiting all week and leaves today, so we are ready for a few days of quiet.  Sunday we will have hubby's family over for a bbq and then Monday we will head to the beach for some R & R...so excited for a fairly mellow weekend!

  • Yes! Friday night I have a girls night with some friends. Saturday we are spending the day at a local lake. Sunday we are going to this mine up in the foothills, it has these old buildings to tour and beautiful grounds. And Monday will be a clean/ chill day, we may do some painting too. And DH needs to work on some job stuff. Fun times! I'm so ready for the weekend, I wish it was now!

The only good thing is that last weekend, I was home all weekend because I had awful allergies and everyone knows that.  So if I say that I needed to go on antibiotics, they might fall for it.  If they don't fall for it, I don't really care LOL

I promise Im not trying to be a debbie downer but not a single person in this thread mentioned anything about what this weekend is really about so Im going to be "that girl" and just throw it out there. I hope everyone this weekend takes just a minute to think about what this "holiday" stands for. Not only for the many many military members we have lost over the years but for the families who have sacrificed their loved ones as well.

We go to arlington every year and put out flowers/stones. My husband spends a few minutes at the graves of several of his buddies but we visit many we didn't know as well.

@uberbiz thanks for your service, and @Dragontears507 I see a uniform in your siggy Thanks to your family as well
This sounds kinda snarky to me. Maybe its the unnecessary quotation marks around the word Holiday...since Memorial Day IS a nationally recognized holiday. I hope I'm being super emotional and reading it wrong :)

For our family, we celebrate our military every day...and not just on one weekend a year. So it's not about what the 'holiday' stands for, it's about what the country stands for and it's not one 'holiday,'it's every day. My DS and any other children we may be blessed with will be well acquainted with the service and sacrifice of our fellow countrymen and women.

Tl;dr: We'll be grilling and swimming and thanking God for our service members like we would on any other decently pleasant day of the year.

  • We are going to be working outside, we have a meeting to finalize plans on our barn, putting wood chips around the new playground set we bought for DS, weeding and planting flowers, and then Monday we always have a BBQ with family.

It wasn't meant to be snarky. it also wasn't to say we forget about military every other day of the year.

I put quotes around the word holiday because I personally don't like calling it a holiday given that the day is about sacrifice

  • Glad to hear that it wasn't intended to be snarky, and sorry I took it that way.

Even though it's a day to celebrate the sacrifice women and men have made for our country, There are parades in their honor, parties, sales and cookouts. I can see what you mean but I also think it's pretty firmly established as a holiday.

Maybe it would be better to think of it as a Feast Day in their honor? Like some Viking Feast Day to celebrate the fallen

Not all families remember the military every day as a normal thing, so I think it's nice to have a day like Memorial Day to officially honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is definitely moving to see all the veterans gathering together to remember. Marching in numerous Memorial Day parades during my 14 years of service, Taps would always brings tears to my eyes, and I'm positive it still would. I don't bash those who don't recognize the reason for the holiday, I mean, hecks yeah it's the unofficial beginning of summer, and kind of like the official beginning of grilling season - but let me tell you, the boiled hot dogs they served us at the VFW every year were always my favorite dogs of the summer (not to mention the hot apple pie and ice cream).
