We got a hand me down Graco swing/bouncer combo, and my MIL is buying us a mamaroo because her son (and I only call dh her son when he irritates me, haha) thinks "it looks cool like from outer space." God help us all. Hopefully the baby likes at least one of them!
ETA: I'm anticipating hating the mamaroo but my dear mil knows her son likes it so here it comes...
I've heard from numerous people the mamaroo is not worth the money, most of them went out and got a traditional swing because their LO didn't like the mamaroo.
My vote is for the Fisher Price swing. Mamaroo is cool looking and flashy and whatnot. But I got the FP lamb swing, spent wayyyyy less $$, and it still got the job done.

My DH forced us to register for one. Pretty sure he used the same outer space argument. Sigh...
I would trade my momaRoo in a heartbeat for the new rockaRoo. DS only tolerated it for the first 8 weeks then it started clicking from the base totally defeating its purpose. Rock n play after that.
I fell in love with the MamaRoo when I saw it. It is so very cool but I think we will forgo it because of the price and go with the cradle swing. Both DD and DS loved the cradle swing. We need to buy a new one this time and will get one with both battery and A/C power. We spent a small fortune on batteries since its all they would sleep in for a while . Do what you want but I think both is a bit much, IMO.
I agree both is overkill. There is no mamaroo on our registry. One is still coming to our house and dh intends to use it as much as he can. Siiiiiigh.
I wouldn't spend the money on a Mamaroo. We bought the FP Snugabunny swing and my DD napped in that thing for 18 months. If you go with a traditional swing make sure you get one with an A/C adapter. The battery operated ones eat through the batteries too quickly.

This. One of my best friends had to just give up on the Mamaroo and go buy a cheaper swing because her LO hated the Roo
Apparently I am a boy bescause it was totally me who couldn't resist the looks of the mamaroo. So we registered for it, but if we don't get it... We won't be buying it, we will get a regular swing
S14 August Siggy Challenge.....ALL OF THE ALCOHOLS
I have both. My sister bought us the Mamaroo for DS and we only used it 2 times. I used my FP swing way more. However, we are moving to a new place and I plan on keeping the swing in the living room and the Mamaroo in the basement so I have some place to put LO when DS is playing downstairs.
ETA: I would just pick the swing. I wouldn't spend the money on the Mamaroo if it wasn't a gift.
Also -- just FWIW - with my last pregnancy I registered for a swing that went side to side rather than front to back - everythign I read about sounded awesome, that it replicated womb feelings, etc... my girlfriends got it for me... baby screamed every time the swing would start up... ended up going to a used store and picking up the tried and true Graco front-to-back swing for like $30 and he LIVED in that thing during naps and difficult times until he got too big for it. :-)
We have the Fisher Price swing and I'm so glad. DS liked it on the fastest speed. The mamaroo looks like it goes so slow in comparison. I don't think it would have soothed him like the swing did. We'll see about this munchkin!

Same here. DH thought I was nuts. When I showed him how it works in the store he said fine add it. We were given a swing so if we don't receive the mamaroo as a gift we won't buy it. My friend has one and her little guy loves it.
One of DH's co-workers recommended the Momaroo to him, but neither of us were really interested in it once we saw it. Yeah, it looks cool, but it in no way seems worth the money. We plan to get a FP swing that adjusts to rock front to back or side to side. I've spent years working with infants in child care, and a plain old swing has been beloved by 98% of those babies.
I see the mamaroo on craigslist for around $120 all the time. If I get one I am getting a used one provided they still have the RECEIPT!! I read that there are error messages and if you do not have the receipt it will cost you another $100 to get it back up and running.:(
I say go with which ever swing in in your budget and it MUST plug in. Baby may or may not like the swing but if baby does the batteries WILL die at the worst moment ever. So as long as it plugs in and you don't have to sell a kidney to purchase it. We have a Graco swing that I bought 2nd hand for DD2, I never had one for DD1 but she LOVED the one at my girlfriends house and would sleep in there for hours so I bought it for DD2, and she hated it. Kept for #3 and she was ok in the swing but got pestered alot by her older sisters. Not sure if I will even bother pulling it out this time.
I have the mamaroo, DS didn't care for it as a "swing". It has very fluid movements and he preferred to be rocked. All kids are different though, my nephew seemed to like it. We used it mostly as a seat to put him in since it sat in our living room. If you only want to purchase one, I'd go with the swing it's a lot less pricey.

I'll even take it a step further and say that it MUST plug in AND have a battery option -- we had a 3 day power outage that might have caused a divorce if LO couldn't still swing (he was like 4 months old at the time, I'd just returned to work, and he was teething)...

Same here. DH is super techy and really liked it and I have friends that rave about it. If no one gets it as a gift, we won't go buying it ourselves.

Honestly, I would return it and use the money to buy something you actually want... DH wanted this super fancy bassinet and bedding that we were never going to use, I humored him and put it on the registry (dumb idea) and his Mom of course bought it... we returned it and used the $ towards our kick a$$ stroller. If she was upset she never said anything but it truly was a waste of several hundred dollars.
This would start a war between DH and I. I won the battle of it not going on the registry. We will keep the gift receipt and if the baby hates it, we will figure something out - but if his mom follows through on buying it, I won't start trouble. AND I guess there's a small chance the baby will love it, in which case I will eat all the crow.

Haha. My DH said the same exact thing. I have deleted it from our registry twice. When I delete it he adds it back on.
My friend has a mamaroo and her babies seem to like it. I am not a fan of the price, looks and also it seems to take up more space. I did register for a bouncer that's kind of on the expensive side -- the baby bjorn one that is "baby powered". I like that better b/c it can fold up. No, we don't have a whole lot of space in our house...
You don't need them all, nor even you don't know yet if your baby will use one or any of them. I was so up to buying a 4moms swing since its something very cool, modern & the price it's not that bad but almost all my friends who had it said its worth all the $ but they stop using it after a while, either the baby didn't like to use it anymore or was broke (they returned it to store). But I ended up with fisher price swing, pretty much same $ but this swing is known for such a long period of time. So everything is new is good, but old staff is much better.

Mom of Boys!!
Baby #1 - 3 years old
Baby #2 - Born 10/1/14
My friend has one and her little guy loves it.
DS hated the mamaroo, he liked a swing better. (not that he loved the swing either)...
