1st Trimester

Due 1/1/15

So I found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago and had my first ultrasound last week.  I had estimated my due date and then had it confirmed of 1/1/15.  It is an easy one to remember, but how do you handle the comments from a friend/stranger on your due date?  I have had a lot of "OMG! You could have the first baby of the New Year!", "You are going to get so much free stuff", and my personal favorite "Your poor kid will probably be born on Christmas".  I am trying to be calm but I feel like these are getting out of control and my emotions are starting to get the best of me with the continuous comments.  I am trying to find calm comments back but I am struggling.

  • I would try and avoid the naysayers...I am due 1/15/15 and hear all the negaitvity...and then the weird comments about how smart my child is going to be cause its born in January. I just try and block it out or as @manateearmz says...just tell people it makes you uncomfortable at the comments and that you appreciate if they kept it to themselves.  You have a lot going on already with the pregnancy not to mention the hormones...I had a guy stop me from falling in the metro today and I broke down into tears walking out...LOL not sure why. Just surround youself with the people who help and F the ones that just add to the stress. :)

Good luck on your munchkin and tons of happy thoughts your way!

  • The theme is "people say crap".  On any given day, when someone says crap to you, it won't be the last time.  Moving on.

  • I am also nervous about having a January baby, my biggest fear is going into labor during a big snow storm, I just hope people won't make rude comments to me about it, as it freaks me out enough as it is

  • Awesome, my baby will be a smart athlete! LOL. I often wonder where people come up with this stuff. If that were true, professional athletes would all be born in january.

  • Ooo, a smart tax break!  Obviously I've orchestrated this well.  (Though I'll admit that with me and my husband as parents, the child has zero hope of athleticism - I am already mentally enrolling him/her in archery lessons.  Or golf.)  Also, people are SO RANDOM - who comes up with these January wives tales!

  • Agree with others that you'll need to roll with people's stupid comments, no matter when you're due. The only disadvantage, in my eyes, to having a baby in January is having to meet a new year's health insurance deductible. Of course, you may not have one or it may not be much, but that was my first thought!

My brother is a January baby and played golf in college....maybe there's something there!

Didn't mean to imply that your brother was unathletic.  :)  But really, when it comes to the obvious kid/youth sports (team things involving balls) DH and I are...worse than words can express.  Also considering fencing for our future child.  (And yes, I realize that golf, archery, and fencing, all involve athletic prowess - but you can be plump and bookish and still accomplish them, so they are obvious choices.)

  • No matter when you are due people say something. I was due September 5 and I live in AZ so every time I told someone my due date they would say, "Oh you have to be pregnant during the summer!"Um...yeah. A couple times people would say, "maybe you'll go into labor on Labor Day." Ugh. My brother was born Jan. 1 and people still make comments to him about his birthday.
  • My personal favorite (I'm due Aug 5th): You're going to be so miserable this summer. Really? Ya think so?

ETA: Pretty much what @smithaz602 said, except I don't live in that hot of a state.

Yup. Everyone would say, "I feel so bad for you! It's going to be so hot and uncomfortable!" No shit. I've lived here for 20 years...I know what the summers are like.
  • I guess I am more floored that people "do say crap" like it's not the average "Congrats" or anything.  I know there is probably a 5% chance I actually deliver that day, but have some couth. I do get the comments that "You will miss the worst months during the summer".  It just takes some of the excitement out, as if I didn't realize any of these options when I found out I was pregnant.  When my sister was pregnant with her twins, a lot of people would say "OMG! You are huge. When do you pop?" So I guess it does just begin earlier than what I thought.

    Thank you all!

Tell everyone that your accountant is hoping for the end of December.

My son was born on 12/28 so we got to claim him on our taxes that year.

    That shut people up about the Christmas comments. :) <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  • My husband bday is 1/1  and honestly its pretty awesome. Every year as a child he thought everyone set off fireworks for him and he was OBSESSED with fireworks. As he got older he would have his family celebration and then party with his friends at new years parties. You decide if you want to roll xmas and bday gifts together and can politely mention your preferences to any family that might send gifts so its not like the situation is totally out of your control. The only downside is people make New Years plans well in advance so you need to plan bday stuff months early. He was the first baby in the hospital or county, can't recall which, but not the state so they did get a huge amount of free diapers.

As far as the Jan old wives tales - he is crazy smart, managed to get a PhD in organic and medicinal chemistry. Athletic, ehh not so much (understatement of the century)
