Can They Ask Me These Questions...

I have a form to fill out from a recruiter for a position I applied for.  There are a couple of questions that I am hesitant about...

Significant Other & Their Occupation
Children (Name & Ages)
Current Home Info - Own/Rent, How Long
Support System & Family Locations

Any input into how to respond?  I need to submit this tonight but after seeing this I am not really sure I am interested in the job.

    Thanks for the advice!  In looking at the job & the company I do not think I am going to be interested.  They are a weak competitor in the segment of the market they participate in.  The job description requires you to be able to lift 60 lbs on an intermittent basis.

    Um, yeah, wow.  I don't know that they "can't" ask those questions, but they are stupid to.  They are opening a huge door to being questioned on why they didn't offer someone a job.  Now- if they tend to hire women who are married w/ kids- that's one thing.  But if they ask those questions and then only hire men or single/childless women - um, yeah.  Dumb.

    I would not answer those questions. They really have no bearing on your ability to do the job.

    They cannot legally ask about marital status.

    I know they can't ask if you're pregnant - not sure about asking about other children. I know it was a policy at my last job to not ask.

    I think they can ask about owning a home - they can do credit checks with permission.

    That last question is strange, but I suppose depending on the job, it might make sense.

    I've worked with a recruiter just looking for admin positions in healthcare and pharma and I don't ever remember this kind of thing. I wouldn't have answered. Weird!

    I can't believe they have those questions written down. Asking is one thing, and is totally stupid, but writing it down?

    I wouldn't apply for a job with a company that stupid....then again I'm a lawyer. A company like that will always need a lawyer.
