OB group- love 3 dr's, hate 1

So I go to an OB group with 4 doctors- 3 of them I really really like. But the one that delivered my last baby, I won't even see her anymore (which is OK, they don't make you necessarily rotate through all the docs for prenatal visits). I like the office, nurses, staff. I like that they draw blood and do US and NST (if needed) right there in the office. Do I take the 25% risk that the dr I dislike will be the one delivering babies when I go into labor? Or do I go through the hassle of switching groups? I'm really torn. :/

I think it would depend on why I didn't like the one doctor and exactly how much I disliked her. If her bedside manner isn't the best then I don't know that it would be worth switching, but if she just forces decisions on you (i.e. epidural, induction, etc.) then I might really be considering going elsewhere.

  • Are those the only four doctors who might possibly deliver your baby?  Even if you go into labor on the weekend or during a holiday?  I ask because my OB rotates on-call shifts with several other doctors.  I considered switching for a few reasons, but ultimately decided not to because I like her for prenatal visits.  Since I'm due so near Christmas/New Years, it's likely that I might go into labor when an on-call doctor will deliver.  In that case, I have no choice about who delivers.....and, really, IMO, it's not a huge deal who catches the baby.  You deal more with nurses in L&D, and the doctor isn't really there for a long time.  As long as you're comfortable with the doctors you're seeing for prenatals, I wouldn't bother switching.
  • Meh.. If the office is really that amazing, I'd stay. I never even met the Dr that delivered my DD, my regular OB was out of the country, and I ended up with a csection so the midwives were off the table- it was just a random OB at the hospital.

  • I am in the same boat. I love the three OBs at the practice I go to but they have a midwife there that I can't stand. She rotates through call, so I am just crossing my fingers she won't be on call when I go into labor. The way she practices is fine, but I have worked with her before and just don't like her personally. I am taking my chances because I love the rest of the staff.

  • I had a random on-call midwife deliver my 1st baby and she was awesome. This OB who delivered baby #2 basically sucked under pressure. He started coming out super fast and by the time she got in the room I was crowning. The bed wasn't taken apart (the bottom half) and the dr was all "I can't deliver a baby like this. I can't do this." She was frantic and yelling (I was calm and focused. Had a natural birth). Then I think she thought he was stuck so she was yanking on him and he got a broken collarbone. Then she was super bitchy to me when I told her I could feel the stitches as she was sewing me up (not enough numbing meds). Basically overall a bad experience. I don't care too much who "catches" the baby but it's important to me that they have control over the situation if necessary.

I actually switched for this reason. I was at a wonderful midwife practice. Dd's birth the midwife was amazing. Ds is a long story but the on call midwife sent me home from the hospital without even coming to talk to me and I ended up having my son at home 3 hours later which he was fine and all and it may not have been her fault but as she never checked to see if I was dilated I will never know. Dh delivered ds and couldn't get him to breathe and it was very traumatic for him. Thank god everything was okay. I agree with what someone above said. I don't care who catches the baby I just want them to have control over the situation and to trust me. I'm sad to leave the practice but I refuse to have her again.

  • I'm not sure if I would switch - yeah the one doctor sucked - but in all honesty, it could be that anyone delivers you - maybe not even those doctors. For example, my practice had four doctors when DD was born. We had a scheduled C-Section at 8am one morning. At 1:30am that morning I went into labor. The on call doctor that was at the hospital was not even one of the four that was in my practice! The lady didn't know anything about me. She gave me the c-section, which I was fine with, so basically a doctor I just met about an hour prior to that cut me open.

So I don't know - the chance she will get you again is probably low and if you love love love the other doctors, I'd stay.
  • These stories are awful! I have my first OB appointment today, and the practice is huge so I know I'm going to have some decisions to make.
