Mosquito repellant - what is safe

The Mosquitos this year are huge! Anyone know if products like OFF are okay to use while pregnant? Normally they don't find me tasty, but at my fitness class tonight I was eaten alive.

  • If you want to go the natural route the Burts Bees herbal mosquito repellent works really well.  Just be aware that it is really oily.  Actually it comes out more like a stream and you kind of rub it in.  My sister started using for my niece a couple of years back when she was 3.  The mosquito's love me so I figured I would give it a try.  It really does work...for us anyway but everyone is different.

  • I have found in the past the natural ones stink like citronella. I hate that smell not pregnant. I can't even imagine how much more awful it could be with my super nose.

Does the Burt's bees stuff smell? @Autumnsnow‌

  • Yeah didn't think of the smell..it's not really citronella smelling. I would say maybe more on the Eucalyptus side but maybe that would bother you too.

Actually just checked and it does contain citronella oil...sorry :(  But it also contains rosemary and lemongrass..maybe it would mask it enough

  • I have used skin so soft on dd and will probably use it for myself too. Hadn't really thought about it.

There is a product line called thermacell that is awesome too. You don't put it on like a spray. It's a machine thing that you turn on and place near you, or you can wear it on a backpack or belt if you're moving all around. It makes like a 15 foot barrier around you. Not very expensive either!
  • I would recommend staying away from any repellants that have deet in them. I live where mosquitos are almost considered a state bird there's so many and I found some Off repellant that was family friendly without deet. I would much rather go the natural way, I'll have to try the burt's bees stuff.
  • Thanks ladies

On my daughter I use badger spray and balm. Haven't tried it on myself when pregnant yet though.
  • Anyone tried the OFF wristbands or clip on cartridges? My ILs got some for my nephew.
Skin So Soft allegedly works for most of my family but not me! I can't stand the smell and swear when it mixes with my chemistry it just attracts more of them.
Most of the time I just eat a couple of match heads before heading out. Seems to last 4-6 hours even on the river bank. My dad taught me that, and it works pretty well for me. I'm not sure if that's normal, though :-/

I use Badger stick on DS, so that's probably what I'll use too if need be while pregnant.

  • NunyaBennis I'm the same way with Skin So Soft.. I tried it a couple times and each time I got eaten alive...a lot worse than I normally do..but yet it worked for others around me...I think it was because they were just paying attention to me haha
