nurses, how long are you working?

I work in a busy emergency department as an RN. I was planning on going to my due date. I am now 38 weeks and struggling to keep up. Anyone have experience with this?

I am working through the end of my 38th week, I did this last time as well. It was tough but my coworkers were great. I ended up having my baby 3 days after my last shift and hope to do the same this time.
However, I work on a surgical unit that is not as intense as the emergency room. I scheduled myself for lighter shifts but I know you can't really predict when your unit will be busy or slow.

  • I'm working full time 12 hr shifts until I have baby. It's getting really tough physically but I don't want to go into my maternity leave time. I work in a busy hospital too so I feel your pain.
  • When I was in the ICU I worked until I couldn't effectively do my job independently (mostly the repositioning if patients that got me at the end). I ended up stopping at 37 weeks. I also had terrible sciatica with the pregnancy that contributed to stoping early.
This time I stopped a week prior to my RCS, which is scheduled for Friday.

I working through my 38th week. That's 2 more weeks of work & it's gonna be rough. Being on your feet for 12 hours is for the birds!! I'm only working one day next week & then a week after that we've scheduled our induction.

    Oops...wasn't done!

I'm not one to ask for a bunch of help but I have been lately. I simply can't do the things I used to. I also usually try to be super nurse and go way above & beyond for both patients & their visitors. I don't know how to say this without sounding lazy, but some things have to slide a little. I'm prioritizing my patients & doing what they need but my visitors are all on their own for the next 2 weeks. Sorry folks!
  • I just cut back to 20hours/week.
But, now I am loosing out time after the babies are born :-(
Why does this need to come out of FMLA??

  • I do 2 12hr shifts/week
On a medical surgical floor my last day I will be 39weeks+2days

It's getting tougher, but my fellow nurses and aides are understanding and helpful, plus I have only 5 shifts left; I figure if I put my mind to it I can just work thru it, in order to have the max amount of time off with LO

  • I'm an ED RN as well, and am on the schedule until my due date. I don't want to waste a single day of my leave waiting for this baby, want to spend all of it loving my baby. That and there will already be 2 other girls on maternity leave so a slow pregnant nurse is better than being further short staffed

  • I work as a casual hospice RN (inpatient facility) and my last shift is toward the end of my 38th week. All the repositioning that goes on gets tough toward the end, but it's not terrible (for me).

I give you nurses SO much credit! My mom and aunts are all nurses, and I know how hard they physically work during the day! I don't know how you guys do it 34+ weeks pregnant!
  • I am not a nurse but feel you. I am a 2 nd grade teacher. The last two weeks have new rough. Somedays I am on my feet all day long and it is so busy. We even have two teachers in the room.

My feet are selling. Carpal tunnel is bad and badly bruised my rib last week.

Everyone has been great. My principal actually said to me she thinks I should leave now instead of the end of the year. Just got a Dr note. Miss my kids. But it was getting rough and I also had an hour commute both ways.

I am 36 weeks this Thursday. I so feel you. Do what is best for you!!!

I'm working until my due date. I did it with my last 2 pregnancies. It's hard but generally speaking I'm in charge a lot. And of course my due date falls on my weekend so I'll be at work!

I work on a 44 bed PCU/DOU as a bedside RN. I'm out next starting next Wednesday at 36 weeks. Just can't physically keep up with my own expectations for myself anymore. I am very lucky in that I have the short term disability available to cover this time and that it will not effect my time off post-delivery.
  • I'm still at it with no plans to leave until baby is on its way here. I'm slower and things are taking longer to get done but I'm hanging in there.
