Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Diaper rash.

My LO is 3 weeks old and has had diaper rash that has been getting progressively worse over the past few days. I have tried Buttpaste and Desitin and have not had much luck with either. I was given a few small samples of Aquaphor, but not enough to really gauge its effectiveness. What is the best for combating diaper rash. I feel so bad every time i change him and see his poor diaper rashed bottom.

Try changing more often, and maybe try a different brand of diaper.

  • I second the changing diaper brand suggestion. My LO started to get a rash but I caught it very early, changed the brand, and then caked on the Desitin. It worked very well for him. I had to use one of those diapers again a week later (it was the only one left in my diaper bag... mom fail!) and noticed him getting red once again after only one use. Trial and error, trial and error.

Are there little red satellite bumps.  Sounds like it might be a yeast infection if its not getting better with those creams.  bathtub with some baking soda or an antifungal prescription will help if it is yeast.
  • DS1 used to get horrible diaper rash and the only thing that worked was Triple Paste. My ped recommended it and the rash was better within that day.

The success rate of diaper rash treatments is as varied as the babies being treated. It's a game of trial and error. For DS, max-strength Desitin (or equivalent store-brand generic) with 40% zinc oxide worked best for active rashes. I also had great success mixing petroleum jelly, lanolin, and all the scraps and samples I'd accumulated, along with a few drops of tea tree oil.

If your LO has very sensitive skin, you might try using plain petroleum jelly or lanolin (or a 50/50 blend) as a barrier after every change once you get the rash healed. Good luck!
