I started solids right at 5 months, LO will be 6 months in a few days
She's an adorably chunky girl (19 lbs I'm estimating)
I'm doing puréed foods and using the baby bullet 1 time a day - at night before bedtime routine.
It's going really well and each night I keep waiting for her to signal that she's full, but she never does, she eats a full serving every time and I am starting to wonder if I should offer more until she shows signs of fullness?
Here's the extra info: she is still up at least 2-4 times a night and wanting to nurse (sometimes just a little but at least one or two solid 'meals')
I'm not trying to stuff her full so I can sleep- although I miss sleep with a deep longing!
I'm also concerned about overfeeding since she's already 95% and I thought food under one was just for fun.
Lastly, one serving is approx. 1/4 banana or 1/4 cup peas etc. mixed with BM so you get a sense.
Here's a photo of my good eater in return for your thoughts!
Re: How much does baby eat? Solids ?
Anyways, I'll bring it up at her 6 month app but it's nice to hear that I'm not crazy worrying about overfeeding.
People are always saying not to worry but I just want her to have a healthy relationship with food.
I also do think that she just loves solids because it's fun and maybe feels good in her mouth- she lives the spoon and her bib as much as the food!
8:00 - oatmeal with a little fruit
10:00 - 8 oz bottle
12:00 - 3 oz bottle
1:00 - jar of homemade baby food. He's offered finger foods like snap peas, blueberries, and cucumber. He mostly just plays with those. He also practices with his sippy cup.
4:30 - 4 oz bottle
6:00 - offered more homemade food and finger foods. Some days he eats a lot, others he wants nothing to do with it. More practice with the sippy.
7:30 - 5 oz bottle
He is offered milk frequently and can have as much as he likes but this is the way he's been doing it for a couple weeks now. We've been doing solids for about 7 weeks. He still wakes up at night sometimes but not to eat.
I just wish I could tell if she's not STTN because she's not getting enough to eat and/or drink during the day, or if she just isnt ready to STTN.
It's helpful to see that others are doing multiple solids a day, something to consider since right now we are just doing one time.
Also wondering if I should up her bottle sizes, she gets 6 oz max (BM or formula) but I bet she would take more if offered. (She gets bottles at DC)
Maybe it sounds weird but the blueberries are a huge hit. He likes the taste and trying to chase them around his tray. They're easy to gum also, so it's good practice chewing.
@JaysonandKristin I do let LO feed herself and I'm amazed at how good she is at it! I put purée on the spoon and she takes it from there, and she actually gets the spoon into her mouth 90% of the time!
For everyone who says to stop nursing LO in the middle of the night, I agree it's often just got comfort but is there a way to provide the comfort if nursing without the feeding? Do I just try to hold her and give a paci instead? Not sure she'll buy it!
2oz of fruit or veggies and 2oz of oatmeal mid morning, then 2oz of meat puree and 2oz of oatmeal mid afternoon. Sometimes in the evenings we will also do some Greek yogurt and some fruit. I don't measure at night, but roughly 1.5-2 tbsp. She loves to eat food, and would probably for go bottles ifI let her. She is still small, but gaining steadily, so I'm happy with these amounts.
5:45- 6:30am range - nurse
7:30/8:00 - one pouch of yobaby yogurt or 2 ounces BM mixed with baby oatmeal (about yogurt consistency). Sometimes ill mix a little fruit in there.
9:30/10 - nurse then nap
12:30/1ish- nurse
1:30/2:00ish -nap
3:30/4ish - nurse
5:45ish - veggie or fruit or combo. About 1 whole pouch usually. Or if I make my own it is maybe 4 tablespoons or so.
6:30/6:45 - 5 ounce BM bottle (I've always done a bottle at bedtime since birth)
7:00- asleep (sleeps all night)
Sometimes there's an extra nursing session or cat nap in there somewhere, but that's basically it. He has never refused food or turned his head away. So I'm assuming he would eat more baby food than I'm giving him, but this just seems like enough right now. Sometimes he gets a little purée if we go out to lunch just so he can't eat the table with us.
I'm reading Good Night, Sleep Tight and she's really harping on breaking the food-sleep association. Weirdly, our nanny had a lot of success with naps today putting him down without the bottle and letting him self soothe. She said the first time was less than 5 minutes and the second one was about 30 seconds.
In theory, my goal is to move nursing to the front of the bedtime routine instead of the end. For example, Diaper, Jammies, Book, Nursing becomes Nursing, Diaper, Jammies, Book. I'm trying to switch it back one place at a time. Didn't go over well tonight... and I had to go nurse him back to sleep an hour later when the dogs went nutso because our damn neighbor wanted to borrow a tool. Effff... I just don't know if this is going to work. He goes down perfectly at night! Just wakes up a million times.
I'm not doing the sleep coaching as she suggests, but I do see the value in teaching him to sleep besides nursing.
