Any way to differentiate dairy sensitivity and oversupply?

DS has some issues - reflux with choking and gagging, grunting at night and unable to be on his back, congestion, and nearly always wanting to nurse when not sleeping. It is not terrible and he rarely cries. His poops are mostly yellow to yellow-green and seedy but I think I'm starting to see mucus. They are never bright green or foamy that I can tell. Based on this, is there any way to tell whether the symptoms are due to MSPI or my oversupply (pretty sure I have it since he only nurses one side and doesn't drain it, plus he chokes when I let down). I'm block feeding to try to reduce my supply and will go off dairy if necessary, but I did it for DD but it will be harder now that I have her to feed too... DH can fend for himself!

Re: Any way to differentiate dairy sensitivity and oversupply?

  • I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It sounds like you have experience with dietary restrictions, which are no fun but still manageable. I had OS and LO has MSPI and unfortunately figuring out and fixing both were a slow process. It took more than a month of being dairy/soy free to see a change in LO's poops but he was sleeping better within days. Because OS symptoms look a lot like MSPI issues, in my experience the only way to know is to cut out dairy and/or soy to see what happens. Good luck!

Are you sure it isn't just reflux?  That's what those symptoms sound like to me.

I guess it's the mucus that concerns me. Also, can't reflux be exacerbated by OS or MSPI?
