Pay Family Member to Watch Baby

Hi there! I am just wondering how to come up with a number to pay a family member to watch infant 6-8 hours a day, a few days a week.

I would find out what the going rate is for sitters/nannies and start from there.  It probably depends on who the family member is, and whether or not they are doing this because they want to, or if they are going to rely on it as a source of income.  It would also depend on how much training and experience they had.

My sister uses her MIL for babysitting a lot.  I think they offered her money, but she refused, so instead they bought her an iPad, pay for memberships to the zoo and museum so she can take the kiddo, stuff like that.   She's retired and has a pension, so she doesn't need the income.

Now, if it were like a SIL or cousin, I'd feel like I had to pay a decent wage.  Also remember that if you pay more than a certain amount per year, you need to report it to the IRS (ladies with nannies can help out here!).

  • I'd consider the nanny wage as a definite start. If you have family willing and able to watch your infant for less than a nanny makes, I would also look at what you would pay at a center for that amount of care. It will be less than a nanny makes but may be enough that your family member feels adequately compensated.

another important thing to keep in mind is how much your family member needs to make. If it's their only source of income they probably need the nanny wages.

  • One of my sisters watches our children and we pay what we would have paid sending them to a center.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

    This for us too.

My in laws refuse payment. Instead, we pay for their cell phones, iPad data plan, and gym memberships.
This is what we do with my parents.  We have offered to pay them many times and they refuse so we try to compensate them in other ways.  My mom is a retired teacher and has a good pension.  (Dad still works).  They don't need the money and my mom truly enjoys watching DD.

  • To tack on a question: Is anyone's parents/in-laws watching your siblings children as well? My mother watches my brother's LO's (one is 2yrs and the other is 6mos) and I would love it if she would watch my LO, but not really sure or confident she's up to handling that many kiddos at once. I would be happy to pay her as much, if not more than the DC, but I'm concerned about the work load on her.
