Nanny raise for baby #3

We have a full time nanny who watches our 2 kids now all day everyday.  Baby #3 is coming in August and my oldest will start a 2 day a week "preschool" where she will be gone 8:30-2:30 2 days a week beginning early September.  I will be on maternity leave until early November.  What is an appropriate wage percent or rate increase for the 3 kids, knowing that 1 will be gone about 2/5 of the time.  If it matters, the oldest is still a napper so expect she'll nap from the time she comes home til we get off work on the days she goes to school.

I had been thinking 10-15% more per week but would love to know if this is off base.

Re: Nanny raise for baby #3

  • I'm going to page @litzo27 because I know she has a nanny. But I can't remember if she had one before her DD was born...

  • I would add $2 an hour for the new kid and I would not reduce for the preschool thing.  My DS#1 is starting preschool half days in July and we are not reducing her rate for two reasons (1) she is doing drop off and pick up with two other kids in tow and (2) she still have to be available to pick up DS1 if he gets sick or something.  This seems to be the consensus on other sites that I searched.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

That makes sense.  $2 an hour seems reasonable.  She won't be doing drop off or pickup unless there was a very extenuating circumstance.  Getting 2 kids in and out of the car to go pick up another one just sounds horrible all around so DH and I plan to handle all of that.

I wish I could do drop off and pick up, but I need to leave for work at 7:30 and my husband leaves at 6:00 am.  :(

Also she'd still be in charge of 3 for snow days, school holidays, sick days, etc. and I personally wouldn't expect the naps to last forever. Dd is 3.5 and basically stopped napping around age 3.

I like the PP suggestion of several dollars an hour extra.

I'm no help really because I sent DS1 to daycare a year before DS2 was born and I sent DS2 to daycare half a year before DD was born. But if there are sick/snow days I do expect the nanny to take care of them without extra compensation. That was part of the contract when she signed on.

Good call on the sick and snow days thing.  It shouldn't really matter that 1 child will be gone a little when we decide on the increase.

We are fortunate that we live in a small city (250k) and our commutes are like 7 mins. It's basically 5-15 mins to get almost anywhere here so we can do the drop offs and pick ups pretty easily.
