Stretch marks :/

Hello mums to be :-)

I'm a first time mum and just hit the 14 week mark! Just wondering if anyone has any useful tips on preventing stretch marks... I know a lot of people say it's based on genetics but I've read varying opinions on this and I'm desperate for any advice people can give. I've started using silcocks base as I've heard that moisturising can be a good way to keep the skin 'plump' and create new skin cells.. Is this true or am I wasting my time? Also any other oils or creams that people can recommend would be really great!Congrats to all mums to be :-)

I use Mother's Special Blend oil and Mama Bee Belly Butter.

I know they say oils/creams don't make a difference, but I feel better doing *something*.
I used those when pregnant with DS, didn't get any stretch marks; they may or may not have done anything.

  • FTM here,  no advice to give.....My sister got wrecked with stretch marks, so I imagine I will be the same way.    I have started using Bio Oil and I have some Mederma on standby.   Do I expect these things to work ?   No.    I am ok with pissing away a little money just for the peace of mind that I did at least TRY to do something.    Even if it doesn't work,  I won't be wishing later on that I would have tried.

  • I used African Shea butter and it worked very well.
But I have friends that swear by Bio-Oil.

  • I've heard it's mostly up to genetics too and my mom had stretch marks on her stomach from having my brother and I, so I'm likely screwed, BUT this hasn't stopped me from rubbing coconut oil on my belly. I haven't read anything or done any research about whether coconut oil is good for preventing stretch marks, but I use organic virgin coconut oil and I feel more comfortable slathering that all over my body. The only thing I have read is that coconut oil is good on your nipples when you're breast feeding to help prevent chapping/cracking, so I'll continue it when LO is here.

From everything I've read there isn't anything you can do. Stretch marks originate UNDER the skin so oils/lotions don't do a lot.

I have heard some people have success reducing stretch marks AFTER pregnancy with straight-up vitamin E. It was also recommended to me to reduce a scar after surgery and it worked.

  • I'm so screwed in the stretch mark department.  I have stretch marks on my boobs from puberty, so there is no way this baby isn't giving me some!

  • Thanks all! Think I may have to just face up to it and try my best with the damage control after :-) still going to keep with the silcocks base and bio oil though just for the 'placebo' side of it and otherwise pray for the best! I got some minor stretch marks on my boobs and legs during puberty but they completely vanished years ago so maybe I'll be that lucky again... Fingers crossed :-)

I wish mine had disappeared!  I'm still sporting them 2 decades later.  Mine are pretty pale though, so I can't complain too much.  My sister's turn a dark purple color.

  • I have stretch marks on my upper thighs and lower back from growing during puberty. I was always thin too. I thought for sure I'd get them while pregnant with my first. They never came. So strange how it works!!

This keeps my hopes up natedawg!! :-)
  • I used vitamin E oil after puberty and after my last pregnancy and I was pleased with the improvement. I got them all over my butt last time. Lame.

  • Also while I have you ladies all here; any cures for this new found acne I've gotten? I never really had anything other than the rare spot here and there growing up but now it's like I'm a 15 year old boy; acne everywhere... It's really awful! Any recommendations?
  • I wish I had recommendations to prevent them. I'm looking for ones to make them less noticeable. I have had stretch marks on my boobs, legs and stomach since puberty and over the years they have just gotten worse since I've gained weight.

  • FTM mom here, but I lost a buttload of weight in college (went from about 140 lb to 95 lb and from a full D cup to a B) and only have barely noticable stretch marks on my boobs so I'm hoping that's a good sign (although my mom said she had stretch marks with me, she also said she gained 100 lb during the pregnancy!).

Anyway, because I feel like I should be doing something (even though it's probably just up to genetics) I started using Anti Striae Maternity Pregnancy Stretch Marks Prevention and Anti Cellulite Cream from MommyCare. LOVE the smell of it, but I can't justify spending $30 per 7 oz. When this is gone, I'm probably just going to use cocoa butter (which I can't stand the smell of -- I hate going to bed smelling like a cup of hot chocolate, but it's cheap).

Oh, and water! I've heard drinking lots of water is good for your skin, but really it's not like we shouldn't be doing that anyway. I aim for a gallon a day (although I'm happy at about 100oz).

  • I used bio oil with my last pregnancy and didn't get a single stretch mark. It's pricey in my opinion you can get it at target for $20. I used it twice a day and I've been using it this pregnancy too
  • I'm trying Bio Oil, but I'm a FTM, so I don't know what to expect.

... As a mama from Ireland sadly I don't have access to target but will definitely be on the hunt for some cheap places here , thanks :-)

No problem! I'm sure you can get it via the Internet
    ;);)

  • Possibly time... Not sure how far along you are but I had it BAD in the first tri (I have had acne all my life, starting in 6th grade!) and as soon as I hit the second tri, it all disappeared. I don't think my skin has ever looked better than it does right now, with the exception of the short period of time I took oral bc pills.
Into the second tri now, 14 weeks, and it's only really started the last week or so... So much for the glowing ha ha
  • I swear by Mustela's stretch mark cream! This is my third pregnancy and I have yet to get a single stretch mark (and my mom is covered in them...). My two sisters and sister in law have also used it and after their combined 5 kids none of them got stretch marks either. It is a little pricey ($40 a tube) but each tube lasts about a trimester for me. Babies r us also runs sales sometimes where you can buy 2 and get one free :)
