Timeline for First Appt

I'm about 4.5 weeks right now and the OB I was referred to by my GP scheduled me for my first prenatal visit this Thursday. I won't even be quite 5 weeks at that point. Is that normal? Because everything I've read said the first visit is usually around week 6-9. I'm just worried it's going to be a wasted appt and that I'll have to go back in and pay another copay etc. Also, I'm not considered high risk. Opinions are appreciated.

Thank you!

I think it is based on the office. I had my first appointment at 4w1d. It was quite uneventful and he had me get a beta drawn that day (Thursday) and then I went back Monday for a second beta. I'm awaiting a call now to schedule my next appointment which will include a dating ultrasound if my numbers are rising appropriately.

  • With my insurance, I only pay a co-pay the first appointment. Typically, your first appt is kind of a waste because all you do is pee in a cup and they confirm your pregnancy. You may ask the dr some questions, he/she will congratulate you, and you are on your way. But, every dr is different so maybe they will do a dating U/S for you although it is very early.

  • I have to pee in a cup again to confirm even though my GP did urine and blood? Annoying! lol. either way, I'm still excited for the appointment, I was just a little concerned it was happening so soon since that was contrary to everything I've read. I'm an information seeker so anytime something happens that contradicts what I've read I freak a little bit lol

Not necessarily. I said typically. Every doctor is different. You didn't mention in your initial thread that you had already peed in a cup so I was just assuming a typical first visit since you said you aren't high risk. I assume GP is general practitioner yes? I have never seen one to confirm a pregnancy and was unaware they did that so I did not know that was the case for you.

  • I went in for my first appointment at 5 weeks. Ur ob will prob want u to pee in a cup and get his own results even though ur gp did it already. ( I had several blood draws ordered by mine and he still made me pee in a cup) My doctor gave me a huge folder of dos and donts and other info ect too. This is my first so I was thrilled to get in early and ask questions about what to expect

  • I have been to 2 different OB offices and both didn't want to see me till after 8 weeks, but I know people who have been seen sooner for an "informational" visit then later for an US. etc. I have never had routine Betas drawn (this is my 3rd pregnancy).

You'll need to pee in all the cups while pregnant. I'm pretty sure I did it at every single OB visit.

Gotcha!. Lol. Yes GP is general practitioner. I went to them initially because I've not been in Las Vegas for very long so need to be referred to an OB etc out here and it turns out they do urine and blood draw for confirmation. I was like sweet- kill two bird with one stone lol. I was super excited too because they had saturday hours so I was able to get in right away :-)

Well as pregnant women luckily we always have to pee huh? lol one upside to that downside hehe.
  • My first appt is at 5w3d and then approximately 2 weeks later, I'll have my first ultrasound appointment.

Later on in the pregnancy they probably look for protein in the urine which can indicate issues. Just my guess.

  • My OB had me come in for an exam this afternoon. They wanted an official confirmation of the pregnancy, I did all the paperwork, and my OB reviewed all the dos & don'ts, normal symptoms, etc. I go back in 2.5 weeks for the first ultrasound and bloodwork.

I agree, I thought it was a little odd when they scheduled me so soon. My previous OB didn't have me come in until I was 8 or 9 weeks. But I did everything then: paperwork, bloodwork, ultrasound. It was a long appointment.

It was a little overwhelming too, honestly. And DD has to go with me to all my appointments since I'm a SAHM, so I'm sure she appreciates the shorter, albeit more frequent appointments. (The only downside is my OB is in the same building as her pediatrician, so she FREAKED out when we first arrived today because she thought she was getting more shots! Poor baby!)

I just called to set up an OB appt and they wanted me to come in TOMORROW! I thought that shit was insane! My first OB appt with my DD was around 10wks, I set the appt. for 8wks this time, I'm in no hurry to sit down and hear about what I can and can not eat during pregnancy anyway.  8-|

It varies a lot from place to place. This place I'm at now likes to see people between 6 and 8wks for the first appt.

It definitely depends on your OB's office. When I was pregnant last year (before loss) I called them and they scheduled a viability scan for ~7 weeks...but I never went to it... I'm not considered "high-risk" because of the loss, but they have been a little more hands-on this time nonetheless. They had me come in for 3 betas before scheduling my dating/viability scan for 6w4d LMP. The U/S showed a heartbeat (114) and that I was actually 6w exactly. I am going for a second U/S to monitor the hb (make sure it's >120) at 8w6d. I actually have NOT peed in a cup for them yet :)
yay for not having to pee in a cup for them yet lol. What is a beta? I've never heard of it before but then again this is my first time so I imagine there's a ton of stuff I haven't yet heard of lol.
