For those that had big babies...

Did your doctor identify that you were having a big baby before you gave birth?

My boy was almost 10 lbs and after I had him a lot of the hospital staff asked if i knew he was on the big side, which I realty didn't. The pedi was surprised I didn't have GD, producing a baby that big.

My doctor was not on call this weekend when I had him, so he stopped by yesterday and checked on me and everything. Then he came back this morning and said "I didn't realize the size of the baby when I checked in yesterday. You were measuring on track". He seemed apologetic, I think.

I'm just wondering how typical it is for doctor's to identify that before you give birth. I mean, everything went great and it was a vaginal birth and everything. But I was 39 weeks - it's scary to think what he would have been if I went a week over like I told my doctor I was willing to. I'm guessing if they identified how big he was, they would have definitely suggested an induction in the near future..?

Re: For those that had big babies...

  • Baby girl was 9 lb. 9 oz born at 38w5d. My weight gain was normal so even though I had GD, no one measured the baby's size and I had a VBAC at home. Ina May Gaskin says it's incredibly rare for a baby to truly be too big. There have been 10, 11, 12 pound babies born vaginally under her care.

That's true - they can't really be too big. And I know growth ultrasounds are rather unreliable, so I probably wouldn't have wanted to rely on one anyway. It was just funny how my doctor seemed taken aback like he should've known and somehow missed it.

  • My dr gave an estimate with my first but never checked size this time around. He was 9 lbs 11 oz at 39 weeks. I was a RCS but had hoped for a VBAC. I'm glad I didn't push to wait the extra week or two like I had thought about doing.

Yes, DS measured ahead my whole pregnancy. He ended up weighing one ounce less than my final growth US predicted. At birth, 40w2d, he was 9 lb 7 oz and 22 in.

This baby is measuring even bigger and will likely top 10 lb even though she'll be here a week early. We'll see in 2 days how close the tech was on this one.

My blood sugars are normal and I've even been watching my diet (only gained 12 lb) and exercising. Big babies just run in my family and DH's.

Can they tell without doing an u/s? At 36 weeks mine measured 7lb 6 oz and now I am 40+5 so I am worried about having a giant baby. My doc hasn't said anything except the ultrasounds aren't very accurate.

  • My doctors office does not do any guessing unless your high risk. They do complain regularly about my weight. Gained 45 lbs so far and I'm really not sure why. They asked me to gain 35 ish. Oops!
One dr did mention how tiny I am everywhere else and that I'm measuring normal. She said it looks like I'm all baby and he may be a big one. Not sure yet since he's not here yet.
  • @drjwj‌ my dr also said the ultrasound measurements aren't accurate.
  • My last ultrasound was at 28 weeks and dr said baby was measuring big and my fundal height always measured ahead. I induced 2 weeks ahead for Preg induced hypertension and my LO was 9lbs 2ozs via vaginal delivery. So i also wonder what would've happened if I hadn't been induced! My DH and I were both around 9 lbs so we weren't expecting a tiny baby but my dr never ordered growth US and I was a little surprised. Also, I didn't have GD either.

  • LO was 9 lbs 1 ounce. We knew he was measuring big. I had normal weight gain and no GD. Big babies run in DHs family. He was too big, and got stuck. We ended up with a c section. I was totally calm and prepared to have a big baby too, just didn't happen for me.
  • Not sure about this one yet, but we knew with my first. I was measuring ahead though, about 2 to 3 weeks. She came at 39+5 and weighed 8lb15oz but her head was huge. The first thing the doctor said as she felt up there before I started pushing was "oh wow, that's a big head!"... exactly what every first time mom wants to hear! She was delivered vaginally, with vacuum assist and I had a second degree tear.

My DD was 8lbs15oz born at 39w5d with a 14" head but born via c-section.  The on call doctor lifted her out and said "What a pretty baby.  What a big big baby.  She is heavy!" lol

My doctor was surprised as she estimated her to be 7lbs8oz.  I did gain 55lbs but always measured on track.

  • I had large babies. This guy was 9.12. I'm 5'1, 115 not pregnant- I've always said it was God's cruel joke to have me carry large babies. Delivery was never difficult, never had GD, I did gain more than I should have this go around (36 pounds), but the only rough part was lugging around a mammoth fetus in my small frame. Doc always said babies were large, but not an alarming size.

My first son was 9.2 and I did not have GD. I knew well in advance that he was measuring big, even though I was not. I found out after the optional 12 week u/s & blood test that I had extremely high hcg which can cause smaller babies. At a later u/s to check his size to make sure he was still growing we found the exact opposite- a pretty big baby with a big head and broad shoulders. Because we knew, I had multiple sizing ultrasounds and found out he was high risk for shoulder dystocia. This knowledge allowed me to make an informed decision that if I hit 40 weeks bc of his size I would have a c/s. I'm glad I did bc he was already stuck in the canal and had a very hard time getting him out during the c/s.
