Breast Pads -- Coupon Code, How Many, And Should I?

Hey all. I just got this in an email, and I did want to get some, but I don't know how many to get. Or, should I even take advantage of this at all? It looks like, if I buy the 10 pairs (two pairs in each "pair," really, so that's 20), plus you can add on 4 extra pairs (so, really 8) at $2 each, it'll be $22 something, because shipping is $14. I like the idea of reusables, but someone else weigh in on what I should do. I'm trying not to buy a ton, but breast pads isn't something I'd put on a registry (nursing bras, things like that I have on a separate private list) because I feel weird.

"Use promo code "SPRING14BP" at Breastpads.com to get 10 FREE pairs of Breast Pads (five 4-packs)  - a $35 value - today!"

I didn't like how the resuable ones didn't lay flat after washing, so for me it wouldn't be worth it.  I have 6 that I wore overnight and wore disposable ones to work during the day so that it was less obvious that my boobs were spraying milk everywhere.

  • I never leaked at all with DS, so I never used any breast pads...so I wouldn't get too many ahead of time, just wait and see what you need/like.

I had a couple pairs and never used them. I used the medela disposable onesmore and you can buy 100 of them for like 10 or 15 dollars. I had milk supply issues so rarely used them anyway.

  • I never used reusables, it was easier to use the disposables. I leaked a lot, which was ironic, because when I'd pump/nurse, I never could get much milk at all.

  • I did some research RIGHT after posting this, and what you guys are saying seems to be what the rest of the world is saying. I LOVE reusables (I'm a Divacup wearer with cloth pads for any light days), but everyone seems to think disposables are the way to go.

Somewhere I read that you need like 100 just for a WEEK, but is that just at first? Or through your entire time breastfeeding?

Regardless, I think I'll start with disposables, see how that goes, and if I do need them a lot, I might try reusables, just picking up a few to try them. I won't go ahead at this point...

  • While we're on the topic, I don't need a nursing cover, DO I?

I mean. What's wrong with using a thin blanket? Am I missing something?

I used reuseable pads and never had a problem with them at all.  I'm planning to use the same ones this time around.  I had maybe 16 or so of them, and I threw them in the regular laundry and never had any issue with them laying flat or whatever people were complaining about.

I wouldn't get a nursing cover ahead of time; some babies hate them.  They're convenient because of the strap and shape of them (don't have to worry about it slipping down if baby is wiggly), but I would start out using a thin blanket, and then decide if you want a proper cover.

  • Good call, @SusieBW. I think so much of the things I want to get out of the way and purchase are things that I don't even know if I will need. What if, despite trying my hardest, I can't breastfeed? No need to have any of this, then. I should know by 2-4 weeks if I'm going to be a breastfeeding champion, and I probably wouldn't have gone out in the world yet to even need these things, right? So, I should probably just put those on the "maybe" list for after.

You don't NEED a nursing cover... a thin blanket does the job... but depending on where you are and what else you are doing (you will become a one handed master) it is sometimes helpful to have something that slings over your neck. I personally used a nursing cover sometimes and a blanket other times. Also depending on how long you plan on nursing, it mighht be easier for you to have a cover that wraps around your neck (my DD got squirmy around 6 months and would move a bit more than I would have liked)

  • I also had reusables and loved them.  In the beginning I was using disposables, but had to use them every day and it felt like such a waste (and was such an expense).  I'll definitely use them again.  But as PPs said, you may want to see if you actually have leaky boobs before you stock up on either kind.

I breastfed for about 33 months and never used a single breast pad or nursing cover.  It really just depends on you and your baby :)
  • I would recommend a nursing cover!   I took my daughter to the Dr.'s at about a week old and forgot my nursing cover at home.  I think I flashed everyone.  OOPS!  But, some people are more co-ordinated or don't care.

  • I used both disposables and reusable. But I made mine out of receiving blankets, I had a ton and was able to make 6 pairs. Im not great at sewing but they super easy and I found that they were more absorbant than disposables and I leaked like crazy. So if you use disposables and find you wanna try reusable ones you can always just make your own for cheap/free if you get gifted with a million blankets like I did.

  • I rarely leaked but I was paranoid about leaking and hated wasting the disposable ones so I bought four sets of reusable ones and only used them when I went to work.

Is the hate for reusable a based on their shape (that they tend to pucker)? One of the blogs I was reading recommended reusables a that are heart-shaped (I feel like they had a stupid name...bamboobies or something?) and I registered for them at BRU. Any reviews of those?

  • So I went round and round and round with this.  When I first came home I was leaking and used disposables (Lansinoh) - and I hated the way they felt - I then moved to bamboonies.  THe overnight ones were super soft and awesome - but 100% showed through every shirt I owned.  I then developed ... humm I don't remember what its called but basically my nips would get cold and BURN.  I read that wool was good for it and found these: https://www.amazon.com/Nursing-Pads-Original-Style-Small/dp/B0018SY2NO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1400621140&sr=8-2&keywords=wool+nursing+pads

Don't be fooled - you want them BIG.  The reason is - they cover so much area they don't show through.  They are soft and the reviews and write up are right - you only have to wash them about once a week.  I own two pairs and I changed them every 12 hours.  My biggest issue was most nursing bras don't have padding and my nips showed through and that bothers me - so I wore the pads after I wasn't leaking for that.  I'd leak here and there and it was nice to have the security.

I didn't like the disposables as they showed and puckered on me... but my g/f wore them with both kids for a year.  If you find the lansinoh on deal the cost is actually pretty minmal - she would wear one pair a day.

I keep A BOX of disposables on hand in case I was to get thrush - then you'd want disposables and for this baby I figure I'll use them to start when I'm heavy leaking.

those are the ones I used, and I loved them!

ETA: the circular overnight ones did show through shirts, but I didn't have an issue with the heart shaped ones.

  • Like, am I an idiot? Why would they show through shirts? Are nursing bras really thin? I could stuff a crayon in my bra right now and it wouldn't show through shirts.

  • For those of you that didn't leak...share your secret! I constantly leaked. I always had a let down in the shower, leaked from the opposite breast while nursing and had random let downs through out the day....I wasn't on a great schedule though, maybe that was my problem.

Anyway, I used disposables (Linsolan, sp?) and liked them. I used two "pairs" a day, one set in the morning and one set at night. This time around I discovered "Milkies" milk catchers that catch any leaked milk so you can freeze it. They are like a nursing pad but have a hole for your nipple and a receptacle to catch leaked milk. Im really excited about this because with DD, I was throwing away soaked pads and that stuff is liquid gold! The Milkies website mentioned that they are kind of bulky so they may not be suitable for all day wear at work or in public depending on your preferences. I will still use disposables at night.

I used and loved Bamboobies (the heart shaped ones).  I leaked a good deal, especially at night and they were great.  I think I have 4 or 5 pairs of day ones and 2 pairs of overnight ones.

I went through a lot of disposables and felt bad about wasting the money and the environmental impact (though I still use disposable diapers) so it made sense for us, especially now that I'll get to use them again.

  • nursing bras (for the most part) are like completely unpadded bras.. I don't wear especially tight shirts - but I wear a lot of t-shirts and everything shows..

I did use the bamboonies - heart shaped ones - and those didn't show - but they shifted too much for me and thus left me uncovered :(

I have milkies - they are HUGE - and I don't think they stay in place all that well - so aWESOME while you nurse (for the other side) but not so much through the day

In the shower for engorgement (btw) - i used this: https://www.showerhug.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=3  -

It was soooo soft - and I slept in it when I was really leaking - what is that around 3 weeks or so when things "settle" down?

  • I really liked the idea of reusable ones since I went through so many. I also found they didn't lay flat after washing and were very obvious under shirts so I reserved them for night time use. However i leaked a lot and they just weren't absorbant enough for me :(

  • Disposable are the way to go.  You will find lots of coupons for different ones out there.  I do warn you, hold off on buying too many.  You may have every intention to BF, but you may run into issues and cannot.  A friend of mine bought a ton and then had to return them later.
For me, by around 6 months I didn't need any during the day and turned to using reusable ones at night.  I like the Bamboobies because they didn't get all deformed after you washed them.

    @SPurp13

I have a nursing cover (acutally got a couple of them) and they were so damn hot I gave up and used either a scarf or thin blanket - there at the end I didn't even care who saw me.  I live in FL so under the nursing cover became a freaking sauna to poor DS.  He was miserable under it.  If you live in a cold climate place then this might be nice for your LO.  You can find promo codes on-line to get one.  I did find an infinity scarf that can be used for nursing.  It worked okay, but DS still didn't like it because he got hot.
