Fighting afternoon nap/my child is a beast

Anyone else dealing with nap issues lately? DD is cutting teeth, but that hasn't even really affected night time sleep for is. When she seems uncomfortable, we do baby Motrin before bed.

But for naps, it's been awful. She fights and fights until it's 4:30 and she just passes out. She's down to one afternoon nap, usually from 1-4, with a 9pm bedtime. She usually sleeps through the night until 8am. I know we are lucky and she's usually a good sleeper, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having nap issues?

Re: Fighting afternoon nap/my child is a beast

  • Our baby sleeps from 8PM-8AM, although lately it's been more like 7AM.  She only takes one nap for about an hour at 11:30, after an early lunch.  She was fighting her nap and cried for about an hour sometimes, so I decided to just wait for her cues.  That meant I was putting her down about 20 minutes later most days.  But it is now a few weeks later and she's been tired at 11:30 again, so she's going down right after lunch without a fight.

I am perhaps not the best person to comment because I feel like we're headed towards no naps, and that is something I really do not want.  I also feel like we could probably do a 30 minute nap at 5 PM without consequences because she gets tired then (and we do this some days when she is really tired), but most days I do not do it because it just does not seem like she feels much better when I do it and she resists napping so it doesn't seem worth the fight.  It would be ideal if she would nap from 12:30-2:30 or so because then I feel like she's be better rested for the long period before bed, but I just don't think that's in the cards right now.  With such a good bedtime routine, I am just keeping it as is and hoping for the best when it comes to naps.

One thing I am going to do is do some kind of black out on her windows.  With the sun being brighter this part of the year, I think she is not sleeping as well during light hours.  On rainy days, she sleeps later in the morning and probably a little longer at naptime.

I asked your question to the Feb moms a few weeks ago and they said that perhaps she was overtired, so try napping earlier, or not ready yet, so try napping later.

  • I think 1 is way too late, even if she stays up until 9.  I would try 11:30/12 and see if that helps.
