Ariel vs Arielle

Behind the name says Arielle is the feminine form of Ariel. However, I have seen a lot of Ariel's that are females (maybe because it's the Little Mermaid's name and spelling)?

Do you prefer one over the other and do you pronounce them differently?

Idk if I can type this correctly, but I would say "Ariel" like the little mermaid pronounces it. "Air-re-ul" and I would say "Arielle" like "Air-ee-ell"

AND I don't really prefer one to the other, I love them both.

A girl named Ariel would not take me off guard but I still think it sounds masculine.

  • Ariel is masculine and I pronounce it as ARE-ee-ul (like the late Prime Minister Ariel Sharon). Arielle is feminine and I pronounce it as AIR-ee-elle (like the Little Mermaid, but with the feminine spelling).

  • And not to be the wacko but wasn't that psycho from Ohio who kidnapped those poor girls and kept them locked up as sex slaves Ariel Lastname?? That alone makes it harder for me to see Ariel as a girls name... little mermaid or not!

I much prefer the Arielle spelling and I recognize that it is pronounced differently but I usually at first glance pronounce both air-ee-ul. I like it pronounced both ways but really prefer the Arielle spelling.
