AFO Socks?

DS wears AFOs for toe-walking and he has been wearing Smartknit knee-high socks with them. Since the weather's been getting hot here, I've been trying to find some socks that are still breathable cotton, but much thinner. The ones he has now are like athletic sock weight and I think it's going to be too much for the hot summers we have here. I've been looking online at some different seamless AFO socks, but none of them tell the thickness of the fabric. Anyone have any suggestions for brands of socks that work well with AFOs in hot weather?

Re: AFO Socks?

  • We used Old Navy socks that fold over. Cheap and easy.

  • Thanks for replying. I will look there. I like cheap and easy. ;)  I talked to DS's PT at school today and she said we can use any socks and that they don't necessarily need to come up to the top of the brace.  That's the kind of stuff I wasn't sure of since we've only been using them for a couple of months.

How high do his AFO's go? We use the smart knit ones but they seem just as thin as old navy's. And they're wicking so they seem to keep ds1's feet cooler than the old navy ones. ETA our shoe store recommends stride rite socks for AFO's

HIs go up to just below his knee. He has trouble pushing his knee out over his foot to step forward on flat feet, so I think that was the rationale for using the higher ones: to force the forward movement of the knee. His socks go up over his knee and then fold down over the brace, but that seems like a lot of fabric for summer, having a double layer of sock up to the knee.

It looks like we're going to have a little bit of a transitional period with changing socks (i.e. I will have to suck it up through the tantrums and just change the dang socks. Ha!) I tried to change it up this morning to shorter socks and he wasn't having it. He wanted the Smartknit ones. I will look into Stride Rite too though. Maybe if they are the same color?

  • I am a pediatric PT and work a lot with AFO's.  Most kids do not like wearing their AFO's without socks that go all the way to the top.  Think about how uncomfortable you would be having a piece of plastic constantly against your lower leg when sweating in the summer!  I have had many parents use ski sock liners.  They are very thin and wick away moisture.

Thanks for the info. His teacher changed him into his shorter socks on Thursday at school and he seemed fine with it, but when he took them off in the evening he had a small bruise on his shin, so we've gone back to the taller socks. I found some thinner ones at Stride Rite that seem to work well, but I'll also look into the ski sock liners. That is a good tip.
