Painting Nursery

So are any of you planning on painting the nursery? My husband is extremely handy around the house and does SO much.  It's usually left up to me to do the painting, because he does SO much more elsewhere in the house.  I am sure he would be willing to do it, but I also really enjoy painting.  I have seen differing opinions on the internet about the safety of painting.  what have you ladies heard? I have an appointment with OB next week and plan on asking her also, but I was also curious what you ladies have heard or your thoughts on this.  Thanks!

Re: Painting Nursery

  • I'm hoping with a mask and a window open I can get the okay to paint our nursery! I love my DH but handy he is not!!!
  • Loading the player...
  • You could always spend a bit more and get the low fume paint too. We are keeping the main wall color, but I'm sure I will paint some kind of an accent in there.

  • Make sure to get low or no voc paint and still keep the area well ventilated and you should be fine. With all that being said I still could stand the paint smell when we were painting my DD's nursery. My husband ended up doing all the painting in the room.

  • I asked my ob this question and he said as long as it's ventilated I'm good. He said to obviously stop abd leave the room if I start feeling light headed or anything but that it's safe. :-) I can't wait to get our nursery going.
  • Thanks ladies! I am pretty sure I will spend that extra $$ get the low fumes.  and yes

    @tugglek23 I can't wait either!

  • I thought way ahead on this one. When we painted the guest room before our wedding I made sure to paint a color that would work with either gender (green). That was almost 2 years ago now. So now we just need to clear out the furniture!

  • I painted baby #2's room when we bought the house.  We weren't trying yet but I knew I wouldn't want to do it when I was actually pregnant.  We went with a gender neutral color.  I am so glad I decided to do it that way.

  • @nicnac817 - what did you choose for a gender neutral colour??  I'm so torn on how to paint without knowing the sex of the baby before (s)he arrives!

I chose a steel grey color with white trim.  If we have a girl the accent color will be raspberry.  If it's a boy the accent color will be teal and lime green.

Being around paint fumes is extremely dangerous during pregnancy. We had the nursery painted while we were out of town one weekend so I wouldn't be around it and the smell would be gone by the time we got back.

That's what we did too!  I'm thinking that it's going to be accented with teal and yellow and if it's a girl, I might add some pops of pink in after the fact.

  • I've painted 3 rooms since I've been pregnant.  Just get VOC free paint.  Lowes has it for fairly cheap.

Y'all are more ambitious than me. All the bedroom walls were tan when we bought our house. Still are. No plans to paint.

  • We're painting the nursery, but I won't be doing the painting and DH isn't a very good painter (he spills a lot) so I have hired someone. We used this company two years ago when we painted our living room and up the stairs because we had some complicated wall repair work and dark walls to cover and they were awesome. I wouldn't mind painting the nursery myself, but the walls are sloped and there are lots of built-ins which are finicky so I'm paying someone. They have indicated that they're using the low-fume paint as well.
  • My OB told me it was safe to paint as long as the room was well ventilated and I wore a face mask.

  • I painted ours with a mask on.

  • I painted while pregnant last time & have also painted our bathroom this time so far (& will definitely paint the nursery once I know for sure what we're having!)  My OB said it was safe to paint, as long as I keep the room ventilated :)

  • Ditto what all PP's have said....as well as it's well ventilated, use no / low VOC & if you start to feel icky, leave the room.....you should be fine.

I will just add this: Be careful when storing your low / no VOC paint. When it's stored, if any air gets to it (meaning it's not sealed properly), it starts growing mold spores. DH & I learned this the hard way when we were painting our bedroom last year & used the last of some low / no VOC ceiling paint we had in the garage. We basically painted mold on our ceiling. It was a freakin' nightmare.

  • I think we might stick with wall decals and wallpapers. DH won't let me near any paint, but I don't want to let him do all the work by himself.

  • Just keep the windows open and a fan going.

LO will be in our room for quite some time so it will be sharing a dresser with DD in her room. In the spring we are going to re do our spare(junk) room to a very pink and pretty room for DD.
